The town was named for General James Wilkinson Mandeville, who served as United States military governor of Louisiana from 1824 to 1830 and as president of West Point College from 1829 to 1830. The first inhabitants of what is now Mandeville were Native Americans; they lived near present-day Baton Rouge and New Orleans before European colonists arrived in what is now Louisiana in 1699. By 1715, French fur traders had settled in this area and began trading with Native Americans. In 1760, Jean Baptiste La Salle established Fort Beauséjour on Mobile Bayou (now Lake Pontchartrain) as a base for his piratical expeditions against Spanish colonial forces throughout South America. This early settlement marked the beginning of centuries-long French presence in this part of Louisiana. In 1785, British explorer Sir William Johnson reached Mobile Bayou through which he hoped to enter Spanish Florida through Marco Island (now Miami). After reaching Mobile Bayou, Johnson anchored his ship off Princess Royal Island where he took possession of what would become known as East Baton Rouge Parish (later Rapides Parish) under English control following Spain's withdrawal from North America that year. mandeville la

The city's strategic location at the heart of what was then an agricultural region made it a center of trade with both Upper and Lower Canada until after World War II when oil became more important.
