Lake Charles is a city in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 25,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Orleans Parish. The city was founded on August 24, 1814 by James K. Polk and his wife Rachel Lincoln as the first town in what would become Orleans County. The name "Lake Charles" was chosen because of its longitude - 93 degrees 5 minutes north latitude - making it one of the most northerly American cities at that time. The original settlers were primarily Methodists from Tennessee who arrived in boats from Mobile Bay in 1815 and laid out a township called "Kirkland." In 1819 they changed their name to Lake Charles after General Andrew Jackson's headquarters for the invasion of Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). When France ceded her possessions along the Gulf of Mexico to Texas in 1802, she left behind several thousand French-speaking Catholic settlers who brought their own churches and schools to Lake Charles and other parts of Louisiana. In 1840 John Sibley built what became known as Sibley House on land he had purchased near present day Canal Street and West Boulevard. This dominates downtown today with its tall white Southern Gothic Revival tower that still stands as a landmark; it replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1793 which also served as a courthouse, jail and storehouse. The cornerstone for this building was laid by President George Washington on December 3, 1793 when he visited Baton Rouge for his final military campaign before becoming president two months later.
