Lake Charles is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The name Lake Charles comes from the French term for "the great or wide bayou". The first European settlement in what is now Lake Charles was by Father Augustin de Rochefort and his band of Jesuits on the island of Ile aux Cendres in 1718. In 1802, General James K. Polk established Fort Polk on an islet east of present-day Loop Road to protect American shipping lanes crossing the river St. John's River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. By 1805, it had been renamed Fort Meade after General James K. Meade who served as Commander-in-Chief during the War of 1812. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson moved his military headquarters from Nashville to Saint Louis so he could plan his reelection campaign through electioneering within central Louisiana instead of having to travel to Baton Rouge and then return home via steamboat every day. On February 26, 1836, Jackson ordered Colonel Samuel Houston to build a road from Carthage to Bayou Teche (now Old Hurricane Road) so people could move goods directly from Tennessee into Saint Louis rather than having them transported overland via carriages or wagons which took weeks or even months to complete due to rapids and other obstacles along the way. Houston began construction on this road on April 2nd and finished it on October 16th; this allowed him rapid access into central Louisiana for campaigning purposes without having to go all the way downriver each time he wanted an audience with President Jackson. The old route leading north from Memphis via Arkansas City was also improved by Houston et al., becoming known as Sam Houston Parkway today: today's Loop Road was originally called Hwy 6A back in those days! On November 3rd, 1840 Mayor Claiborne Pell announced that money had been raised enough for a new courthouse which would be located at what is now downtown LakeCharles; construction began immediately upon Pell's proclamation and completed two years later on December 12th following local donations and lots donated by citizens throughout the city limits! This new courthouse became known as Claiborne Pell Courthouse after its namesake – Governor Claiborne Pell himself! (It should be noted that only one side of this Courthouse actually housed government business – the judicial side!) :) . . . . We are grateful for our many civic boosters over these years like Mayor Pell who helped make us one less step behind in terms of public services available within our community!
