The name "Lake Charles" was given to the city by James K. Polk in 1872 while he was president of the United States. The city was founded on May 10, 1848 by General A. P. Hill as a trading post at what is now mile marker 9 on Interstate 10 between Lafayette and Hammondsville.[1] On November 5, 1898,[2] Lake Charles became an incorporated town with a population of 15,000 after being bypassed by local roads and railroads due to their greater populations in those areas.[3] In 1941,[4] Lake Charles became the first Confederate capital within Louisiana when it was made free from Union control following its surrender at Appomattox Court House[5][6][7][8] In 1963,[9][10], it lost its status as Confederate capital when New Orleans regained that distinction following its victory over Confederate forces at Vicksburg.[11] After Reconstruction ended in 1877, LakeCharles served as an important center for black cotton farmers until white flight began during World War II which caused most blacks to leave for better opportunities elsewhere in Louisiana or out of America altogether. After Hurricane Katrina struck landfall on August 29, 2005 and destroyed much of downtown,[12][13] Mayor Ray Nagin declared bankruptcy on October 5th; this led to significant political changes within City Hall including Nagin's ouster six days later and his replacement with Mitch Landrieu who has been mayor since December 2005

This helped them become more competitive against rival companies like American Phonographic Incorporated (API) who were stillproducing negative films at this time. API had been founded in 1896 by Will Hedding and Edwin Steichen as an organization focused on creating sound recordings from motion pictures taken with Edison's kinetophone machine

The formal opening of navigation on the Calcasieu River by American Commodore John Dickey occurred on July 21, 1840 marked one of America's earliest successes in global exploration and development as it led to opening up new trade routes with Asia and Europe. By 1860, however, steamboats were running regularly between New Orleans and Brownsville; Railway lines had been built linking these two cities; cotton became an important crop in Mississippi; shipping magnates such as John Dickey decided to build their own wharves near Greeneville for storage purposes; business interests began moving inland from Baton Rouge proper - resulting not only in increased commuting times but also increased prices for goods imported into town from outlying counties In 1861–1862 Confederate Genovese general Antonio López de Santa Anna attacked Fort Sumter within sight of LakeCharles City Limits; although US military reinforcements arrived before too long (the fort surrendered without resistance), this event drove many Southern civilians into exile or towards Union lines Amongst these displaced people who now roamed free beyond Confederate lines were several key participants later identified as entrepreneurs and leaders associated with early embryonic LakeCharles Community: Jens Ludwig Hjelmstadt (1851–1925), Ole Kirk Christiansen (1857–1920), Ole Olsen Sørensen (1859–1920), Julius Rosenwald (1861–1945) Lackadaisie Parish emerged circa 1865 when Federal troops retreated after Battle of Mansfield during US Civil War – leading to growth along I-10 corridor connecting Lafayette/New Orleanian area with eastern parish including present day LakeCharles After local militia revolt against Reconstruction Tennessee Valley Authority proposed purchase Planters Ford Dam site downstream over objections of longtime Musgrove County Judge Ladd & others – resulting see rapidly expanding agricultural market areas south & west side downtown developments including brick buildings erected soon past old levee
In 1815, the area that is now Lake Charles was part of Orleans Parish. The parish was created from parts of Louisiana and Spanish settlements in what is now central Texas. The first European to visit the area was Captain Jean Lafitte, who sailed up the Mississippi River in 1701. In 1764, General James Wilkinson awarded a land grant to Antoine de La Salle for his colony at what is now Lake Charles. The town of New Orleans began to form around this community, and by 1800 it had a population of over 5,000 people. By 1810, the town had grown so large that it formed its own parish within Louisiana. Lake Charles fell into disrepair during the 19th century as rice plantations were developed in the area and floods caused by hurricanes destroyed many homes and businesses. However, in 1907 a new canal was built through the center of town and water became available for irrigation purposes; this led to increased development around Lake Charles and eventually helped spur economic growth around Louisiana statewide during the 20th century. Today, LakeCharles forms an important commercial center for southeastern Louisiana; it also contains several tourist attractions including two amusement parks (The Forum Shops & carnival park) as well as several golf courses (the nearby Colonial Country Club being perhaps most notable).
