The Battle of Lake Charles was fought on July 5, 1812, during the War of 1812. It was a battle between United States forces and a force of French Canadians. The U.S. military had been sent to reinforce General James K. Polk's army in Louisiana after his victory at the Battle of New Orleans in April 1812. In early June, Ulysses S. Grant's army reached Baton Rouge, Louisiana and began its march southward through the state from their base at Alexandria. On June 3, 1830, American General Andrew Jackson arrived in Baton Rouge with his army and took up position at Sanders' Hotel north of Claiborne Avenue on the west side of town near Spanish moss swamp. On July 5th 1812, Polk's forces under Major General John Cushing attacked Grant's army while it was marching east across the Sabine River towards Lafayette Parish on Lake Charles; however by that time Grant had moved his command inland to escape pursuit by Cushing's troops who were deployed along the river banks behind Confederate lines as part of Marshal Michel Ney’s two armies located northeast of Baton Rouge parallel to and around I-10 (I-10 is now known as Interstate 10). After reaching Lafayette Parish they skirmished with Confederate forces until nightfall when they withdrew into prophylactic positions acrossgrowth southwest of downtown Lafayette which protected them from possible cavalry charges by Ney’s men should they attempt an attack upon their main line.[1] Casualties for both sides appear to have been high with about 50 killed or wounded on one side[2], but there is no contemporary evidence either confirming or denying this figure as battlefield casualties are not generally available from before1814 onwards although some sources mention martial casualties taking place during this period such as Private First Class Elijah Prentiss who died aged 20 days after being shot through the heart while serving in Company D 2nd Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry at Harrisonburg Hill on May 25th 1814[3]. Although captured artillery pieces were taken back to headquarters Union Army prior to surrendering most all cannon were surrendered without further fighting very few cannons actually surrendered themselves meaning that large numbers must have been lost outright including perhaps three guns per regimental average according to historian David Ayer[4]; [5] typical Federal losses resulting from combat include about 60% killed or wounded with another 40% captured alive unharmed[6]).
