The city is located on the banks of the Mississippi River just south of New Orleans. In 1835, General Claiborne Pell issued orders that all Native American males between the ages of eighteen and forty-four must leave their homes within five miles (8 km) or face being executed if found alive. This order led to many young men emigrating to Lake Charles in search of food and shelter from execution or expulsion from their homes. In 1840, Captain James Kenedy founded Kenedy's Landing on the north bank of the river opposite present day Lake Charles proper which became an important stop on water traffic between New Orleans and St Louis because it had a large wharf with ample space for loading goods onto ships for shipment downriver to Chicago through Pontchartrain Harbor before making their way downriver again to market in Mobile Bayou at Galveston Island before finally reaching points east via Prairie du Chien, La Crosse, Milwaukee, Detroit and St Pauls Prairie before arriving at new markets in Louisville newsfield and Richmondtowne along I-64 in eastern Kentucky before finally reaching Cincinnati en route back home about halfway through his journey - this event is documented by Kenedy himself on his vessel "Cincinnati". It should be noted that while Jacksonville Landing may have been contemporaneous with Kenedy's Landing however it does not appear to have received any attention from him given that he abandoned it less than two years later during Hurricane Andrew which caused extensive damage to both sites including loss of life as well as destructionofthewharfandthelocality itself - this makes Kenedy one of only two Ulysses S Grant Governors (the other being Aaron Burr) who are also known personally responsible for entire communities being destroyed during campaigns such as those fought against slavery throughout much Of America during these times period(the other being Union general Joseph Hooker). By 1860, cotton production had declined significantly due to technological advances such as steam engines and other improvements over hand carting supplies from Iraq or Africa. However, small businesses continued to operate until WWI when crop failures led to widespread unemployment throughout much of America including LakeCharles which suffered greatly from federal food stamps programs distributed via mail order that helped reduce poverty among African Americans throughout much of New Orleans area
Lake Charles was founded in 1836 by Captain James K. Caldwell, who named it for General Andrew Jackson. The city was founded on the west bank of the Mississippi River, and became a center of trade and industry. The city's growth led to its incorporation as a city in 1871. In 1902, Lake Charles became a state capital, and has since been home to many major government institutions including the Louisiana State Capitol and the Louisiana Department of Corrections.
