In 1955, President Eisenhower designated Lake Charles as a National Historic Landmark for its significance to African American history and culture. The following year, LakeCharles International Airport was founded there with support from then-Mayor Dick Kupperman. In 2003, Mayor Katrina Holcombe dedicated a new park adjacent to downtown called "Kings Park" in memory of her late husband John Holcombe Sr., who had battled cancer for many years prior to his death at age 73 on August 30th that year

Lake Charles, Louisiana is a town in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Lake Charles goes back to 1811 when it was known as "New Orleans." The town was founded by General James K. Polk and his brother-in-law Donelson on land that had been claimed by Louis IX of France. In 1819, the town became the capital of Louisiana under Napoleon Bonaparte and served as such until ceded to the United States in 1821. In 1830, a surveyor named John Sibley discovered oil wells near what is now Lake Charles and began drilling for oil in what would become Lake Charles. By 1832, production had increased so much that New Orleans deemed it necessary to build a port to handle all the oil traffic from nearby Houston and Mobile Bayou. A wharf was built at Spanish Point on Post Road (now US 90) and crude oil products were unloaded into barges for shipment across Bayou Lafourche or Mobile Bayou to be processed at various mills before being shipped off to Gulfport or Natchitoches for export. The first permanent settlers in what would become Lake Charles came soon after this port opened up; they were men who had arrived with Andrew Jackson's Expedition during the Honeymoon Phase of his presidency in November 1835. They were men such as Thomas Fenton (a British military officer), Elijah White (a slaveholder from Georgia), John Armstrong (a militiaman born free who became an enslaved owner), George Moultrie (the son of an American Revolutionary War soldier), David Ziegler (the son of a German immigrant), and Anthony Wayne (bornfree but worked as a laborer on three plantations). During Jackson's administration, new land west of downtown was acquired north of Canal Street between 10th Avenue and 11th Street; this area became known as Warehouse Square today. The city fathers decided that since Warehouse Square would be located where all future commercial development would take place, they needed a name for their new centerpiece; so they chose "LakeCharles" after General James K.? Polk's home state in Tennessee where he had grown up prior to becoming an American politician. A post office called "New Orleans" reopened July 29, 1840; however its initial use only lasted one year due to problems with Congregationalists using it instead for services rendered by their ministers on Sundays rather than attending services at local churches which were then open to everyone else within walking distance - something that did not sit well with many Baptists who saw themselves as superior because their church offered social services which other denominations did not offer! In 1802, a group of Frenchmen and their women landed on the shores of Lake Charles. The men, known as the Dukes of Orleans, founded what is today known as Louisiana. They were looking for a new home for their growing family and decided to settle in what is nowLake Charles. The settlement was named after the Duke of Orleans, who donated land to the town. The first settler in Lake Charles was Pierre-Jacques Lafitte, who arrived in 1785. He built a small cabin on the banks of the river that later became known as Lafitte's Landing. After years of trading with other Native American groups, Lafitte developed an extensive trade network that helped make Louisiana one of the most important slaveholding states in America. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson came to power in America and began his aggressive expansionism. He desired to claim all of North America for the United States and he believed that slavery should be abolished within reach of American citizens. In order to achieve this goal, he issued a directive calling for all slaves living within 3 miles (5 km) of any white person "to be free." This order caused great tension between African Americans and whites in Louisiana; many felt they were being forced into servitude against their will.
