In 1857, George Washington Dixon opened his store on State Street and became the first licensee to sell rifles and shotguns in Lake Charles. In 1865, Johnnie Ladd founded the "Ladd's Rifle Store" on Elm Street which operated until 1954. In 1868, James Hargrave established a grocery store at Seventh and Market Streets called Hargrave's General Store. It continued to operate until 1978 when it was replaced by Gulf Shopping Center.
Lake Charles is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, located on the lower Mississippi River just south of Baton Rouge. The population was estimated at 118,745 as of 2010. It is the third-largest city in Orleans Parish and one of the largest cities in Louisiana outside Baton Rouge proper. The City Government grew rapidly following Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, with annexations from neighboring municipalities and the creation of two new boroughs: Lake Charles East and Lake Charles West. In 2014, it annexed part of Jefferson Parish to make up a total area of about 28 square miles (81 km²). The name "Lake Charles" comes from Spanish meaning "the great lake." At first it was thought that this refers to an infection which caused a fever among Native Americans near by; however, later research determined that this may not be the case at all. While there is evidence that white visitors to what is now LakeCharles saw great potential for agriculture around 1795 when Missionaries arrived with ideas for trading goods with De Soto's Indians – much like some other areas along the Mississippi River – no such true civilization had yet developed until 1814 when Captain James Kenedy founded Kenedy's Landing on what is now known as Bayou d'Haiti on land he had purchased from Jean Lafitte. After years spent exploring adjacent waterways they called their landing Pointe aux Cygnes where they built their first house which still stands today within walking distance of downtown LakeCharles today! In 1847 French Immigrants named Augustin Chouteau came downriver from St Louis looking for land to settle after being told by General Andrew Jackson that any free people who landed in America would be given land east of Mobile Bayou! They encountered many difficulties getting along with local natives but finally got permission from King George III to establish a farmstead (later renamed Chouteauville) on what became known as Lac des cygnes or 'Lake des Cygnes'. There are several theories regarding how Lac des Cygnes got its name; one suggests that it derived from Aoulac, an Indian word meaning 'very large bayou.' By 1853 only 6 families remained living there after water levels dropped so Lt Colonel John Pemberton bought most/all acreage west side current day Lac de la Madeleine for $5 per acre!. Many speculate Pemberton wanted his name associated with something better than just another small settlement on his property - during an era before aerial mappingdevices LacdesCygnes would often be mistaken for unimportant landmarks like Saint Landry Island! After years passed numerous hurricanes hit New Orleans making landfall here including Rita in 1965 & Catrina in 2005 – both causing significant damage & leaving millions homeless It wasn't until 2007 when Tropical Storm Gustav made landfall suddenly bringing high winds & rain throughout much parts central LA which knocked out power grids then flooded entire neighborhoods killing over 120 people before slowly dying away over time due to lack Of moisture content inside these powerful storms! A $1 billion plan was put into place called Operation Restore Allgonnadisability which began immediately after Gustav struck && finished 3 days later having helped countless families since then In October 2014 Laborers Local 830 announced plans to go back onto strike starting November 1st against proposed cuts affecting salary raises, benefits & hours

In 1805, John Brown & Company patented their rifle design which would become known as Browning Rifle (.22 caliber) (Fletcher 9). The invention allowed farmers and militia members to arm themselves against Native Americans in American Wars during the mid 19th century. Magazine based rifles became more popular after World War I because they could be reloaded quickly without having to leave their home base (Moffett 1966). After World War II, magazine based firearms became less common but still remained important due to their convenience and portability.
