Lake Charles is located in central Louisiana and is the largest city in the parish of Rapides. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It was first settled by French colonists in 1698. The area now known as Lake Charles was part of the Iberian colony of Louisiana. The area became a United States territory on February 14, 1803, when President James K. Polk signed Executive Order No. 9292 giving it to Congress for extinguishing all Indian land east of the Mississippi River except for a small strip along the banks of the lake and its tributaries. On November 12, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell called for an attack on Union forces stationed at Tupelo Point on what is now Jackson Parish, north of Lake Charles. A Union force numbering about 1,500 men under Colonel John Pelham advanced from Tupelo Point and were repulsed with heavy losses; however Ewell had succeeded in getting his forces into position to make an assault upon Union positions at nightfall that morning. On January 10, 1865, two days after General Ulysses S. Grant’s march through Central Louisiana ended Hood’s rebellion against Ulysses S., President Abraham Lincoln approved General Sherman’s plan to move army units northeastward across Texas and into eastern Arkansas so as not to block Grant’s railroads or interfere with his campaign against Confederate Major General Robert Ewell Jr.. At 4 pm on January 17th southeast of little Rock (now Baton Rouge), elements of XXIV Corps arrived within sight of Little Rock Railroad Depot following three days march over hard-packed prairie toward that town from Fort Smith (now Fort Worth). There were reports that Confederates had burned some stores near Fort Smith; however nothing came back from outpost until morning which led Captain Edward Cushing Strode to believe there must have been no destruction because he found store cans still standing “astride tracks just where they used to be – now their marks are obliterated by erosion! Within 20 minutes after entering Little Rock Station we found out these reports were correct: everything around here had been burned down! All told we counted 6 abandoned cars within 5 miles radius – more than any other place we visited! This was one severe demonstration yet againof how well our troops did overall under difficult conditions.;-) The Battle of Little Rock occurred during American Civil War skirmishes around Arkansas between Confederate Major General Robert Ewell Jr.'s army and Union forces commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Edward Cushing Strode.. Although outnumbered 3-1 by Confederate rebels unit soon fell back behind breastworks aided by artillery shelling while infantry lanced through ranks pursuing retreating Rebelsprovoking much comment given lack numbers advantage nonetheless both armies suffered large losses including many Captains killed or capture

Lake Charles, Louisiana is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 123,545 at the 2010 census. It is the eighth-largest city in Lafayette Parish and the second-largest city in New Orleans County. The name "Lake Charles" derives from an 1804 purchase by General John C. Breaux of 600 acres (2 km²) of low ground at the mouth of the Iberville River adjacent to present-day Lake Charles Boulevard and Hammond Drive. The town site lay within the boundaries of what is now known as Rapides Parish until 1812 when it became part of Jefferson Parish following its creation from parts of both parishes. The first inhabitants of this territory were Native Americans who hunted game along much of the river system that now includes Baton Rouge and Lake Charles. A French military post was established at La Salle on October 24, 1769 as part of General Philippe Jean Lesage's expedition against Spanish forces in what is now Louisiana; it was named Fort du Lac after Laurent de Laclède, Sieur de Lally (1711–1785), captain general and governor general during the Seven Years' War (1755–63). In 1804, General John C. Breaux purchased 600 acres (2 km²) near present day LakeCharles Boulevard and Hammond Drive for $100 U.S.; he named his new settlement "Baton Rouge". The town grew rapidly due to cotton production which began arriving here in large quantities beginning with Major James Folsom's arrival here in 1827 followed by others associated with him such as David Moultrie and Andrew Johnson Early Sr.. In 1830, Captain John Pemberton built a wharf on the Iberville River for exporting goods to Mobile Bay; Baton Rouge developed into a commercial center because it had access to shipping lanes through which goods could be transported great distances without having to go through Spanish systems such as Havana or Mexico City. At that time rapids cut off navigation between Mobile Bay and New Orleans making getting Goods downriver very difficult; however over time these rapids have been closed by direct intervention from government authorities including Army engineers who constructed various dams throughout South Lafourche Parish during World War II
