Lake Charles is a town located in the southeastern corner of Louisiana, on the Mississippi River. It straddles the river's banks for about 20 miles and had a population of around 80,000 as of 2000. The name comes from French côte de charlemagne (country of Charlemagne), meaning "shire of Charles". The first inhabitants were Native Americans who hunted and trapsuited in the area now known as Lake Charles. A permanent settlement was not established until 1799 when General James Wilkinson founded a post at what is now called Wilkinsonville on the north side of the river. Two years later, he erected a small fort to protect his interests during the War for Independence. The town grew rapidly with settlers coming from every part of America to trade with France and England during that time. In 1803, General Anthony Wayne moved his army upriver to take position against Andrew Jackson in what became known as The Battle of New Orleans; Lake Charles quickly became one of Jackson's key strongholds. By 1810, it had reached its present size with over 10 thousand residents. During World War II, LakeCharles was an important staging ground for arms shipments downriver to New Orleans from inland factories like Algiers and Port Hudson; it also served as an embarkation point for troops heading into battle on American Expeditionary Force (AEF) boats crossing the river. In recent decades, however, much development has taken place in downtown LakeCharles including new housing developments and businesses such as arts galleries and restaurants; however many people still live along the banks or near military installations such as Fort Polk and Camp Claiborne which remain significant tourist destinations today.

Lake Charles is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana, located on the Gulf of Mexico about 34 miles (54 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans. The population was 116,641 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Louisiana and is one of the largest in the Southeast United States. The original name for Lake Charles was "Cypress". A post office called Cypressville was established in 1821, and remained in operation until it closed in 1875. The name Lake Charles was chosen to honor General James K. Polk, who had been president when Cypressville was established. Lake Charles grew rapidly after being founded as a resort town by Captain John Pemberton and his brother Colonel Thomas Pemberton Sr.. In 1878, Pemberton donated 2,500 acres (8 km2) of land to be developed into a city limits; this became known as "Pemberton Park". With its limited transportation options and expensive real estate prices, LakeCharles struggled to become an important center for commerce or culture during its early years. However, over time it began to grow more significant as a bedroom community for New Orleans and as an industrial center for manufacturing products such as petroleum products and paper products. Although still struggling with economic stability during World War II due to plentiful wartime production being relocated elsewhere within Louisiana or outstripping available resources, LakeCharles recovered slowly since then thanks in part to strong local marketing efforts spearheaded by Mayor Willie Brown that emphasized cultural attractions such as arts festivals and African American history programming throughout the city's history-rich neighborhoods A sign marking one mile from downtown reads "Welcome To The Gateway To The Deep South". In recent years however many new businesses have opened up around downtown including restaurants like 511 Diner which specializes exclusively in deep-fried chicken legs which are then served with sweetened condensed milk on top According to USGS data from 2002–2010,[1] there has been little change overall with respect to housing units built permits issued – while growth continues outside core areas near shopping malls we can see a shift towards higher density housing developments closer to transit stops or job centers away from residential areas seen earlier such as Westlake Village
