The name of the city may come from French: "Lac Charentais" meaning "Channel of the Saint", as it lies on both banks of the Mississippi River. The area that became Lake Charles was first settled by Native Americans, most notably the Kickapoo and Caddo people who were known for their fierce hunting and fishing habits. The area was first surveyed by Pierre Laclède in 1768 as part of his explorations through what is now Louisiana. He called it "The Land of Lakes". In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's Corps of Engineers built Fort Moultrie on an island near present day downtown to protect trade with Upper Louisiana settlers and Indians living around Baton Rouge and Thibodaux. In 1814, when Captain James Kenedy mapped out Central Louisiana for Army officers commanding there during Kenedy's military expedition against Mexico City– its land grantdated back to 1785 went to John Kirby Lumber Company president James Mottola along with other adjacent Rancho San Pablo property which had been granted by Don José de Escobar y Bravo to Spanish nobleman Carlos Manuel de Arce y Bazán (1758-1827). After being abandoned by Arce y Bazán in 1820 due to financial problems associated with his acquisition thereof (he lost interest in it shortly thereafter), this valuable real estate passed through several hands until it came into private ownership various times before landing at Sabine Hahn's hands in 1879 as part of her purchase of alluvial lands west bank du Pont des Prairie from former Illinois governor Ford Madox Blount following a treaty between Blount and Hahn
Lake Charles is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 51,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and the largest city in Orleans Parish. It was founded on August 24, 1814 by General David Dixon as the capital of what would become Orleans Parish. The first settlement here was made by French Creole refugees who had fled to Louisiana after the American Revolution. They built Fort St. John on an island in Lake Charles in 1798. The town grew up around this fort and became known as "New Orleans" because it lay within French territory at that time. In 1814, General Dixon decided to move the capital of his new parish to New Orleans so that he could more easily command troops against Native Americans living east of Baton Rouge. He named Lake Charles after himself and set about construction of a new city there from scratch with support from fellow commissioners James Kenedy (a slave owner) and Pierre Lacombe (founder of Natchitoches). Lake Charles quickly became one of America's most important ports for shipping goods westward across the great Mississippi River system. By 1830, it had outgrown its original small town setting and become a bustling metropolis with over 50,000 residents – greater even than New York City at that time! The growth continued through Reconstruction until World War II when business slowed down significantly due to wartime rationing; however, post-World War II growth has been steady throughout both civil rights movements (the black middle class moved into downtown during the 1960s) and suburbanization which has led to increased pollution levels and some loss of jobs opportunities within city limits but also opened up new opportunities for students studying at nearby campuses such as LSU/Lafayette and Tulane University while preserving much historic architecture along Rue Saint Denis Street between Union Station/White House Square and Canal Street/Oxfords Avenue
