Lake Charles, Louisiana is a city in and the county seat of Orleans Parish, Louisiana. The population was 124,898 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Orleans Parish by area. The name "Lake Charles" comes from Spanish meaning "Carrion Lake." The city was founded in 1848 as a result of the Texas–New Mexico Railroad's construction through Orleans Parish. The first permanent settler in what would become Lake Charles was George Washington White. He built a cabin on Carriacou Creek in 1849, and named his settlement after James Kenedy, 2nd Baron Kenedy of County Mayo, Ireland. As Lake Charles grew, its commercial potential attracted settlers from as far away as Texas and Arkansas. By 1860, there were 905 residents living in town proper; by 1900 it had grown to over 3,000 people. In 1881, entrepreneur David Dixon purchased 8 acres (3 ha) of land adjacent to Carriacou Creek for $1 only to realize that it would be inadequate for housing development and so he sold it back to White two years later for $2 more than he had paid for it originally. This event marked the beginning of what would become known as Dixon's Promenade which runs down South Broad Street from downtown to Carriacou Creek Boulevard and includes many businesses now located within walking distance of each other including Dinerama (now open 24/7), Applebees (now closed), Boulangerie Nouvelle (closed), Dunkin' Donuts (closed), Safeway (now open 6am-9pm), Wal-Mart Supercenter (closed), Pizza Hut (!)) - all within easy reach via public transportation or bike ride! By 1920 there were 439 residents living in town proper; by 1930 there were 1,031 residents living there with an additional 406 businesses within walking distance! In 1949 actress Claudette Colbert moved to town from Baton Rouge following her divorce from husband William Holden; she became one of the most well-known faces of Louisiana during this time period and contributed significantly to growth both economically and culturally in LakeCharles. The post-World War II boom brought a new era of prosperity to town with high levels Of employment throughout various industries such as plastics manufacturing plants petrochemical production facilities architecture firms textile mills etc., but also resulted in increased traffic congestion on Broad Street due mainly to Interstate 10 connecting LA&P with further metropolitan areas across America – making things worse for motorists who often found themselves stranded on single streets while others took them straight up I-10! Lake Charles was founded in 1819 by the brothers Pierre and Jean Baptiste Lacombe. The city was named for General Lafayette, who had fought in the American Revolution. The Lacombes were a French-Canadian family from the Gulf Coast who had moved to Louisiana during the early 1800s. They set up a logging business and, in 1821, built a steamboat dock on the present site of downtown. The Lacombe boat company soon became one of the most important shipping companies in Louisiana. In 1825, they donated land at what is now Chalmette Boulevard and Third Street to create what is now Lake Charles Square. In 1827, Governor Isaac Hill decided to move Baton Rouge eastward along riverfront so that it could become an important white center in Louisiana. He ordered La Salle University be established here as well and created Chalmette Boulevard as its main street. By 1830, Lake Charles had become one of Baton Rouge's most populous neighborhoods and was home to many wealthy French settlers. The Lacombes continued their timber business until they died in 1861; their son L'Esquire then took over their company. After L'Esquire's death, his three sons failed to maintain control of the company and it went bankrupt in 1870. The new management organized several unsuccessful attempts to revive it before finally liquidating it two years later. The bankruptcy made Lake Charles an attractive option for developers interested in developing swampy land near rivers for housing and commercial purposes; this activity led to its nickname "the New Orleans of the South." However, by 1890, only about 10 percent of its population remained within boundaries defined by Lacombe Avenue today (although some neighborhoods have since been reborn). As development proceeded throughout Gulf Coastal Louisiana during this period – with cotton plantations becoming more prevalent than sugarcane plantations – sugar beet production also increased rapidly near LakeCharles Square; however, sugar beet output did not result in large profits for local entrepreneurs like those associated with Lacombe Boat Company or other lumber companies active south ofriver until after World War II when those businesses emerged as major economic forces again along I-10 corridor between Baton Rouge and Shreveport
On October 24, 1848, during the American Civil War, Union General Andrew Johnson issued an order to all military commanders in the area ordering them to blockade the Confederate rivermouth of Lake Charles. The orders were given in order to starve the Confederacy into submission. The blockade failed and resulted in a devastating defeat for Confederate forces at the Battle of Chickamauga Creek.
