The site of present-day Lake Charles was inhabited by the Native Americans for over 10,000 years before European settlers arrived in 1718. In 1803, the area became part of the Republic of Texas and was annexed by New Orleans as part of that state's secession from Mexico. The town was renamed LakeCharles after General Andrew Jackson's visit to that area in 1849 during his campaign for president. On December 6, 1898, President McKinley signed into law Public Law No. 793giving LakeCharles its current name and status as a city within Jefferson Parish with all its corresponding powers and privileges including voting rights and other local government functions. Lake Charles has experienced various forms of development throughout its history: masonry construction began around 1800 on what is now downtown; industrial growth followed in the early 20th century; More recent development has been residential and professional (e.g., medical/legal).Today’s downtown core contains several intact 19th century buildings such as City Hall (1865), Post Office (1892), Masonic Temple (1906), Coca-Cola Bottling Plant (1915), American Legion Post #4 (1927), and National Guard Armory Annex building (#2). The city declined after that point; it only regained its importance as a commercial center once Interstate 10 was built nearby in the early 1970s.
