In 1892, Elisha Gray began business making spectacles for businessmen and farmers in his home town of Lafayette. The early days of this company were difficult asUV light was not available yet which required buyers to purchase special UV goggles or pouches in order to view product displays at trade shows. However, Gray's perseverance paid off as he soon became known for his high-quality spectacles. By 1910,Gray had built a successful business exporting spectacles across America and Europe. In 1915, Lafayette businessman Charles Averill purchased Gray's business from him. At Averill's urging, Lafayette Mayor Willis Sargent worked tirelessly to secure funding for local businesses within the city limits in order to establish a public library system within the city center (this effort failed). With new resources available from outside sources such as philanthropists John Dutton Hines and Andrew Carnegie (the first American millionaire), LAPC was able to build one of America's first municipal libraries - located on Prime Street today - with significant help from its namesakecharitable donors! In 1923Lafayette voters passed an ordinance establishing zoning restrictions on downtown development; this prevented any more major downtown buildings from being erected until after World War II! Many students throughout America attended school at nearby Central High School where classes were conducted through large window modifications made byMrSargent himself***!
