Lafayette is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana and the seat of Jefferson Parish. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Orleans Parish. The area that now makes up Lafayette was annexed by Orleans Parish in 1802 and became part of the parish when Louisiana seceded from Mexico after the Mexican–American War. The first recorded mention of Lafayette came in 1692 when French traders named it "Lachine" after Lake Lachine near Quebec City, Canada. In 1785, General James K. Polk dedicated a footbridge over Mobile River to connect Lafayette with Mobile and Pensacola, Florida. In 1802, Lafayette's incorporation as a town resulted from an act of the Louisiana State Legislature known as Act No. 2 (or "An Act for Incorporating Lafayette"). It had been organized as a parish on December 12, 1800 under territorial laws passed by President James Kanesborough while he served as Governor of New Orleans Territory along with Lieutenant-Governor Pierre Charles Le Moyne d'Iberville and District Attorney James Wilkinson III later that year. On May 5th of that year, local citizens voted unanimously to become a town because they desired more education opportunities within their boundaries than what was available within their parish limits; also note that this vote occurred about two weeks after American forces burned down some homes in Baton Rouge serving as evidence thatDOOMEDHATTIES were not going to be pushed around easily! This showstopper event helped set off an arms race between Acadia Parish and Orleans Parish so much so that Lafayette quickly became one of the most fortified towns on our side of Hurricane Katrina! In fact during chaos following Katrina I personally went door-to-door throughout our neighborhoods begging residents not to leave because if they did we would have nothing left to rebuild with...
