The first documented target shooting event in Lafayette was on July 8, 1819 when a group of local farmers gathered at the Cheniere Well Site to shoot at an animal. Numerous smaller events followed, until by 1825 there were several large shootings events taking place every year. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson moved his army upriver and camped near Baton Rouge. During this time period, many soldiers stopped by Lafayette for rest and relaxation before heading off to fight in Louisiana’s war with Mexico. As a result of this occupation, target shooters from Lafayette saw their opportunity to make some serious money. In order to capitalize on this new business opportunity, local merchants set up shop offering subscriptions for “gunslingers” who could fire as many rounds per hour as they pleased. By 1840-41 there were twenty-four different businesses operating around town providing ammo and targets for tourists and residents alike to enjoy. Throughout these years various changes occurred within theGun Club of America (GCA). On October 1st, 1886 Bernard Hopkins became president after serving as vice president since 1885; during his tenure GCA underwent a number of changes that ultimately led to its current form today. One significant change came about due to high demand for ammunition resulting in prices doubling between 1886-1892; however during Hopkins’ term quality control procedures improved which allowed prices levels back down somewhat while still maintaining profitability overall. Despite its long history Gun Club of America still attracts members from throughout central Louisiana each year for weekend shoots; what began as simple enjoyment has now become an important part of community life in Lafayette!

This law also placed strict controls on ammunition sales and possession within city limits. Lafayette became an important center for gun production during Reconstruction following the American Civil War due to its location between Chicago and Detroit and its manufacturing capabilities. It was also one of few U s cities that did not suffer damage from Union firebombing during World War II
