These early trials led tothe development of today’s shotgun sling system – which is still being used by locals in Lafayette today!

Lafayette, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Lafayette was Pierre de La Salle on July 4, 1769. He named it after General George Washington's home state of Virginia and Mount Vernon. Lafayette Point sat on an opening within the levee system that protected the town from flooding during storms such as Katrina. The first school in Lafayette was built in 1802 by two teachers, Mrs. John Auld and Miss Maria Noel. The first superintendent of public instruction in Jefferson Parish was John Fenton who also founded Acadiana Female Academy in 1817 which became one of the leading high schools for girls in Louisiana. In 1830, Lafayette became known as the "City of Progress". In 1836 Jean Lafitte moved his headquarters from Cuba to Baton Rouge so he could monitor shipping through New Orleans Bayou Bienville and its tributaries using wireless technology called Aerial telegraphy which led to this name being given to him later on by President James K Polk who said (in a speech) "the real Lafitte is located about Baton Rouge" . By 1840, Lafayette had more than 1,000 residents with a post office and 25 businesses including a store owned by Nicholas-Jacques Laffite which sold goods exported from Baton Rouge to ports along the Gulf Coast such as Mobile and Pensacola; all these activities were done without benefit of government funding or support until well into the 20th century when various programs were put into place tocbtee growth including: annexation by New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina; establishment of parish government with an elected sheriff; creation of economic development districts which provided tax breaks and other assistance to businesses; introduction ofDemocracy Now! satellite television program into local media markets throughout parish; renovation/updates to city hall completed with help from private donors culminating in designation as a Historic District under Section 8A law approved by voters in November 2006
