The shotgun was used for hunting and fishing, and later became known as the " Western Gun." By 1907, Lafayette had become an important center for firearms manufacturing due to its location at the junction of several railroads. In that year, rifle manufacturer Allyn & Bacon announced plans to move their operations from New York City to Lafayette. With this new development, gun manufacturers began to relocate their operations to various cities throughout America in order to use the larger markets available in these locations. Lafayette became home to several well-known firearm manufactures during the early 20th century such as Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), Browning Automatic Rifle Company (Browning), Colt Firearms Corporation (Colt), Savage Arms Company (Savage), and Remington Arms Company (Remington). During World War I, cannon manufacturer Krupp moved its factory from Germany to Lafayette in order to produce artillery ammunition for American troops. This collaboration quickly led to Krupp forming a partnership with French arms manufacturer Pechmann which resulted in production of cannons, machine guns, rifles and pistols under the name of Pechmann-Krupp company. In 1925, Purdue University bought a controlling interest in Remington Arms Corporation which gave rise to one of America's most innovative firearms companies when it merged with Leupold & Stevens Manufacturing Co., Incorporated on December 1st that year. The merger created one of North America's leading firearms manufacturers responsible for producing more than $1 billion worth of handguns and rifles over a period of seventy years!
