In 1896, Lafayette became the Arsenal of Louisiana when it became part of the state government. The Arsenal produced artillery rounds for both Confederate and Union armies during the American Civil War. During World War II, Lafayette played a significant role in producing ammunition for both Allied and Axis forces. The arsenal produced more than 1 million rounds of munitions including shells, bombs, rockets, torpedoes and mines. After World War II, Lafayette slowly phased out its production of munitions but remained an important ammo production center until 1977 when it closed its doors forever. Today, remnants of the original Ammunition Plant can still be seen today along with some other Ammo Production facilities from this time period in downtown Lafayette (such as the old Post Office building). The first white person to live in what is now Lafayette was Jean Lafitte who founded the trading post of La Pointe on the East bank of the Orne River in 1699. In 1785, General James Wilkinson arrived with his army to take possession of Orleans Parish and he renamed Lafitte's Post Fort Wilkinson after himself. Jackson refused and instead marched northward to meet Bonaparte at New Madrid where he repulsed his forces. After this victory over Napoleon Bonaparte, Jackson named Lafitte as commander-in-chief of all U.S.-Army troops stationed east of Mississippi River (this area would later become Mississippi). This event helped solidify Lafayette's reputation as a military leader and hero throughout much of America during Reconstruction era following the Civil War (1861-1865). Thereafter until World War II Lafite City served as an important munitions production center for both American war efforts and Nazi Germany during World War II; due to its strategic location at Port Arthur Naval Base about 25 miles southwest of downtown Lafayette it also became an important target for aerial bombardment by Allied bombers during that conflict too Today many people from throughout south central Louisiana call themselves Acadians or Cajuns because they are descendant from French colonists who began arriving here beginning in 1684 when Jesuit missionaries arrived looking for land grants west ofriverBayou Teche. The eastern border of Lafayette is formed by I-10/I-12 exit ramps leading south to New Orleans and north to Baton Rouge; while its western border forms an intermittent line running northeast–southwest along LA 10 before turning eastward towards Midway Airport; this line defines most of Lafayettes residential territory as well as some commercial areas on both sides of it. The town limits are defined by US Highway 66 just west of downtown, Interstate 10/US 71 concurrent with LA 20 to its east and I-10/US 71 concurrent with LA 7 all the way to Midway Airport where they intersect again forming what would be Lafayettes southern border if it did not include that stretch between I-10 and US 668 immediately northwest of Midway Airport borne by Amite County before flowing into Jefferson Parish upstream from there through a series of valleys draining into Lake Pontchartrain including parts or all of Metairie, Kenner, Crowleython Park & Poinciana Lakes before finally emptying into Bossier Bayou about 8 miles southwest near Alexandria Municipal Airport
