Kenner is a small town located in the parish of Plaquemines, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. The first European to visit Kenner was Jean Lafitte in 1699. He named it "Nantucket" after his Nantucket Island off the coast of Massachusetts. In 1712, a French expedition led by Pierre Brissot discovered and named Kenner Creek after Lieutenant Colonel John Kenner, an officer on the expedition. Captain Robert Fordyce explored this creek in 1737 and gave it its present name of Kenner River. In 1802-1803, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded what is now New Orleans under the command of Major General Lafayette Bonaparte and Lt.-Gen. Joseph Johnstonvance upriver from Mobile Bay to take control of what are now Jefferson Parish and Plaquemines Parish west of New Orleans. General Jackson ordered Brigadier General John Purdy to take three companies northward along the Kenner River to reconnoiter this area before advancing further into Louisiana territory. When news arrived back at camp that Purdy had not made it far enough upstream he was replaced by Captain George Hatton with orders to march all night back downstream so that he could join Purdy when he arrived next day instead of continuing on as planned In 1805-1806 another invasion force commanded by General James Wilkinson assaulted Baton Rouge but were repulsed at Ville Platte Bridge over the Arkansas River near modern day Baton Rouge In 1813 Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Macomb founded a post called Fort Hatteras (originally Fort St John) onshore about two miles east side of current day downtown Kenner abouts two miles due south from where Lake Pontchartrain empties into Gulf St Louis Bay In 1830-1831 Confederate prisonersof war from Texas who had been held at Fort Bend County jail near Houston were moved thence across state lines into Plaquemines Parish for use as labor in sugar cane fields around Natchitoches however many did not survive long due mainly to disease and poor living conditions thereindeed only six men out of some 1,000 remain today remaining mostly buried beneath modern day homes built since then including one recently uncovered body still wearing clothing
The town of Kenner was founded in 1835 by John L. Kenner and his brother, Samuel. The community was named for the biblical city of Jericho. The Kenners were a farming family that grew corn, cotton, and tobacco crops. In 1881, they organized the first Baptist church in Louisiana. In 1907, they built the first school in the community.
