The Kenner, Louisiana History Museum has been in operation since 1976. The museum is a nonprofit educational institution which specializes in the history of Kenner and its environs. The museum offers an extensive collection of historical artifacts and materials related to the history of Kenner and its residents. The first building on the current site was erected in 1976 as the then-new Kenner Volunteer Fire Department Station 1. In 1990, the station was moved to its present location, which is located at 5th Street and Elm Avenue. In 1992, the volunteer fire department relocated to their new station at 625 Elm Avenue after having been housed at various locations throughout town for many years. In 1994, donations from local citizens funded renovation of Station 2 which became home to the museum’s archives and research library. The renovation project cost $2 million and was completed in 1995. In 2001, it was announced that the city ofKenner would be purchasing land adjacent to Station 2 for use as a future park providing a home for both the fire department and museum within walking distance for all citizens of Kenner! The park will also include an amphitheater that can seat up to 6,000 people! The park opened in 2002 and remains one of Mayor Clements’ top priorities when it comes to promoting community engagement within his jurisdiction.
Kenner is a small town in Louisiana, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 1,529 at the 2010 census. The townsite that now comprises Kenner was first settled by developers in 1892 as a site for an industrialist's new cotton plantation. In 1901, Mayor A.L. Wilkinson donated land to help build what would become Kenner High School and then-Mayor W.H. Bradford donated money to buy land for the Agricultural Section of the Kenner Library in 1912. The city hall Annex and First Baptist Church were dedicated on October 12, 1916, becoming the first buildings in town. In 1951, when Hurricane Betsy barreled through southern Louisiana and drifted into Texas, much of Kenner escaped damage but several homes sustained water damage from overflowing creeks and ponds caused by flooding during Betsy's passage through the area; this event is often cited as one of the earliest examples of Katrina-level flooding in Louisiana. The town's nicknames include "The Blighted Village," "The Desert Town," "The Damp City," and "Dirty Shame." According to Forbes magazine's list of America's 100 most polluted cities (2008), Kenner has been named second worst city overall for air pollution behind Flint, Michigan; it ranks thirdworst for ozone pollution among U.S., ahead only New York City (1stworst) and Los Angeles (4thworst). The EPA also reports that air quality has deteriorated markedly since 2006 due to high levels of arsenic and other toxins released from oil refinery emissions into atmosphere In response to concerns about air quality issues coming out of their plant near Baton Rouge—the largest oil refinery in North America—Xco Energy Corporation announced they would close their plant there effective September 30th 2020; according to company spokesperson Terrence Sweeney: “We are very disappointed with our findings adjacent to Baton Rouge because we knew there were problems with Air Quality at that facility’s lessee” According to US Census Bureau data released in February 2017,[6] there are currently more than 2190 people living within 5 miles (8 km) or 10 minutes walk of any Walmart store - making it one of Walmart’s top five locations nearest its stores across all states[7].
