Kenner is a small town in southeastern Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a stop on their way to Texas. Kenner's nickname is "The Plantation Capital of the World." The first post office in Kenner opened in 1882. In 1886, construction began on what would become the first civic building in Kenner – a two-story red brick schoolhouse with a garlanded copper roof and clock tower. The first public meeting held in Kenner took place on May 4, 1886, when five citizens met to discuss plans for the new town. In 1888, natural gas was discovered under Kenner's surface and local entrepreneurs soon became interested in exploiting this new resource. By 1890, there were several businesses operating within the community: grocery stores (First National), flour mills (Haley Bros.), carriage companies (Fowler), banks (National Bank of Louisiana), and publishing houses (. Western Publishing Company). In 1911, Mayor John Lunsford announced that he would not run for reelection; he had been term limited by state law at that time. Lunsford instead appointed Hiram Sibley as his successor and renamed the city of Kenner after Sibley's friend and mentor General James Fannin who served as Governor of Texas from 1865 to 1876 and then Confederate general during the Civil War before becoming Ulysses S Grant's Secretary of War after generals Alfred Vicksburg surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th, 1865 After General Fannin's death in 1913, his widow donated land east of downtown to create an open space known today as First Baptist Church Park which contains more than 20 buildings dating back to 1903 including one still used as a polling place for presidential elections . In 1916 Mayor Harry Richardson announced that he would not seek reelection due to ill health but named Clarence Kinnerney as his successor; Kinnerney served until his death three years later . In 1922 Mayor Harry Pugh announced that he would not seek reelection because he had lost re-election bid against fellow Democrat Ethel Broughton; Pugh named Clyde Barnes as his successor . Two years later Barnes appointed Alice Hargrave as mayor after winning election over another Democrat candidate Lloyd Covington III; Hargrave served until her death three years later also due to cancer . After four terms without mayoral succession or successors , Kennethans elected its own mayor Wm Jarrell Smith who served unofficially from 1971 until 1978 when he resigned amid scandal related to secret money payments made by local businessmen during Jarrell Smith’s time leading Kenneth
Kenner was founded in 1806 by General Andrew Jackson as a small trading post on the banks of the Mobile River. The town grew rapidly, becoming an important center for trade and commerce. In 1827, Kenner became the capital of Louisiana. It remained so until 1885 when Baton Rouge was made the state's new capital.
