In addition to its role within the local economy, Kenner also features a significant number of cultural attractions including several theaters and museums as well as three baseball diamonds used by both professional and amateur teams (Kenner High School's “Dollar Diamond” is one of these). Today, Kenner remains an important community celebrated for its culture and history - home to several annual festivals such as Oktoberfest or Mardi Gras - as well as its vibrant downtown which offers plenty of shopping opportunities and dining options besides traditional Louisiana cuisine.

Kenner, Louisiana is a town in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Hammond Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Kenner" was first settled by French colonists in 1699 as La Salle Parish and then ceded to the United States in 1803 as Mecompton Township (a part of Rapides Parish), near what is now Baton Rouge. The community was founded on December 12, 1836 by James Kenedy and his brother-in-law John Salyer as a small post office on the Red River at its junction with Kenner Creek, north of present day Baton Rouge. It wasn't until after American troops were sent to help Presidet Jackson fight General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War that Kenner became an important political center for southeast Louisiana following Reconstruction. In 1870 it became a city under Mayor Cothran's administration; it had reached its peak population of 508 residents by 1900 but declined thereafter due to decreasing agricultural production and other factors such as World War I and Prohibition). Kenner lost its status as a city when it annexed neighboring Livingston on January 1, 1922; Livingston's annexation created Oakwood City which then took over most civic functions from Kenner including parks and public libraries until 1975 when they were transferred back to Livingston proper through legislation passed by both chambers of Congress which also authorized annexation of unincorporated parts of Rapides Parish eastward alongriver into Jefferson Parish without giving consideration to Kenner's wishes for continuation as a separate municipality withinRapides parish only! In 1990, according to the US Census Bureau, Kenner had an estimated population of 6,715 making it the 5th largest town in southeast Louisiana after Metairie (9th largest), New Orleans (11th largest), Monroe (12th largest) and Alexandria (14th largest). In 2000, according to US Census Bureau estimates released that year,[1] 7,026 people lived in Kenner while 984 households made up entire neighborhoods therein;[2] however this number has since changed because many homes have been taken down or converted into apartments or condos since 2000 due primarily to Hurricane Katrina which destroyed much property hereinabouts.[3][4][5] According to 2011 Census Estimates,[6] 8% Of current inhabitants are foreign born
The town of Kenner was founded in 1818 by General John C. Pemberton, who arrived in the area as a soldier on horseback. The town became an important center for cotton production and grew rapidly until the American Civil War halted its growth. After the war, Kenner experienced rapid growth as a commercial center and developed into a major cultural and educational center. The loss of its status during the postwar period led to a decline in population and economic activity until the early 21st century when it regained some of its former prominence as a regional cultural and educational hub.
