Kenner is a small town in central Louisiana, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 9,684 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria-Thurmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Kenner goes back to 1765, when surveyors named it "Canoe landing". In 1817, John S. Kenney donated land to establish a town in honor of his father, who had served as mayor of Alexandria before dying in 1806. The town was incorporated on July 1, 1835. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee and his army captured Baton Rouge while invading Louisiana and moved into northeastern Mississippi near where Kenner now sits. As Confederate troops retreated through Arkansas and Missouri following their victory at Cold Harbor, they abandoned what remained of Baton Rouge and headed for Arkansas again including parts of Lafayette Parish west of I-10 and east of US 90 near Decatur; these were also areas that would become part of Kenner later that year after Confederate troops evacuated from Louisiana across the river to eastern Tennessee. As Confederate troops evacuated from Louisiana across the river to eastern Tennessee (some area now within Alexandria), some refugees traveled by boat downriver until they reachedownsteamboatyards at New Orleans before being transferred by railcar or steamboat to other destinations such as Galveston Island or Mobile Bayou in Texas where they waited out possible military occupation before finally reaching their destination—most notably those aboard vessels "Catherine" (Captain Henson) and "John Fenton" (Master Humphreys). There are still descendants living in many places around this area today: primarily within walking distance or just a short drive away from their ancestral homes in rural Jefferson Parish east/northwest of downtown Baton Rouge; as well as more dispersed throughout southeastern Louisiana outside Metairie parish along I-10; all descendant households owning one or more farmsteads with an associated meatpacking business dating back to pre-Civil War days which continues today operate under one roof since 1960 consisting primarily Slaughterhouse 7 & 8 on I-10 just south exit off Boulevard des Coudres Street between Patton Avenue & Highway 260
