Kenner is a small town in the parish of Orleans in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town was founded by Amasa Walker in 1809 as a trading post on the river's edge. The present-day Kenner community was formed when settlers from nearby New Orleans moved toKenner to take advantage of its fertile soil and excellent water supply. Today, Kenner is home to several churches including First Baptist Church (founded in 1830), Methodist Episcopal Church (1876), Catholic church (1910), Baptist church (1888) and Pentecostal church (1967). The current population of Kenner is 6,500 people. By 1860, however, there were only around eighty families living in Kenner. Most of the residents were farmers who conducted their businesses within close proximity to each other through agriculture or ranching activities. During World War II, much progress was made in developing munitions plants located in neighboring towns such as Magnolia and Monroe (now Jefferson Parish). This development led to increased industry and jobs withinKenner; however, it also resulted in significant pollution that seriously affected local communities downstream including Clinton (now St Tammany Parish) and New Orleans.As a result of these environmental problems and economic conditions throughout much of Louisiana during the postwar decades (and beyond), many Kenner residents left their homes for greener pastures or new opportunities elsewhere during this time period. A few remaining residents have continued to live hereabouts through various forms of subsistence farming practices which include raising poultry/livestock/game animals; growing vegetables; processing fruit trees into juice or flowers; manufacturing some types of items from natural resources such as plastics; etc.. Today’s economy is based largely on services with a focus on health care services due to location near Tulane University Hospital & Medical Center across I-10 from downtown Baton Rouge as well as interstate access to medical supplies from all over North America
In 1821, the area known as Kenner was part of what is now Jefferson Parish. The land that is now Kenner was part of a larger peninsula that extended into Bossier Parish. It wasn't until 1836 that the parish was formed from parts of several other parishes.
