In 1865, white supremacists founded a paramilitary organization called the White League to terrorize black residents of Louisiana. The group disbanded five years later, but it left a lasting impact on Kenner society. For decades after Reconstruction, Kenner remained an agricultural center with extensive cotton farming operations. However, this changed starting around 1980 when oil began to flow into Louisiana from Texas and North Dakota thanks to hydraulic fracturing techniques used for shale gas exploration. This new development has led to increased job opportunities for local farmers as well as changes for both citizens and their economy; for example, since 2000,kenmer's GDP has grown by more than 20%. In recent years,KENNER has seen growth due to its location withinRapides Parish boundaries; this has been aided by both suburban growth outside of town as well as annexation of adjoining villages over time. As a result of all this activity,Kenner's infrastructure is gradually becoming better-equipped and more modernized; among other things, the city library opened its doors in 2009 and plans are underway to build an acreage devoted exclusively to public education within the town limits.
The first permanent English settlers in Kenner, Louisiana were Captain John Smith and his team of men who arrived in 1718. The area that is now Kenner was part of the Muskogee Nation until 1805 when it became part of the United States. In 1843, a group of Frenchmen also settled in the area and named it Saint-Michel. A post office was established at Saint-Michel in 1848. From 1850 to 1860, the population of Kenner grew from about fifty to one hundred people. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest's army near Saint-Michel and five people were killed as a result. The town came under control of the Confederacy after this attack and lost its role as an important commercial center during Reconstruction.
