The Jennings family built their home there until it burnt down around 1836; they later moved to Thibodaux where they continued to live until their death in 1906. The current home of the Jennings family dates back to 1909 when Mrs. Ethel Fenton purchased it from A&P grocery store owner Denny Beaulieu."

Jennings, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 5,558 at the 2000 census. Jennings was founded in 1853 by Andrew and Anna Jennings as a post office on the banks of the Mississippi River. The Post Office was renamed Jennings in 1875 after General John C. Fremont, who served as governor of Louisiana from 1867 to 1870 and who helped boundary the parish between Orleans Parish and Jefferson Parish. In 1904, Jennings became an incorporated city. The history of Jennings begins with its founder, Andrew Jennings. After serving in the Confederate army during the American Civil War, Jennings returned home to start a farm near what is now downtown Jacksonville. He named his farm "Jennings" after General John C. Fremont because he believed that this name would help attract attention to his land. A few years later, AnnaJennings moved her family to Jennings from their farm in nearby Raymondville so they could better support their son-in-law's farming operation. In 1853, local residents formed a committee to create a post office in honor of General John C Fremont due to his numerous military successes during the Mexican-American War (1846-1847). The first post office opened on July 1st of that year and operated for one week before being closed due to low traffic levels. A second post office opened on October 21st of that year and lasted until November 6th due to high demand from customers! On January 7th, 1876, following ratification of the United States Constitution byLouisiana statehood legislators,[1] Jennings became an incorporated city! By 1890,[2] however, growth had slowed due to competition from larger cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge across the river in Orleans Parish.[3] However, by 1920[4], growth resumed and Jenkinsons reached its current population size! Today, Jenkinsons continues serve as an important community within Jefferson Parish with its rich cultural heritage dating back over 150 years!

Jennings was founded in 1836 by John Jennings, a slaveowner who set up a farm on the current site. The first school in Jennings was built in 1840. The town soon became a center for cotton production and prospered until the Civil War. After the war, Jennings declined to become an important Confederate center and instead developed into a small community of farmers and fishermen. In the 1930s, Jennings experienced significant growth as a result of World War II-era development projects such as the construction of the Interstate 10 freeway. However, during the following decade Jenningsbecame increasingly rundown and its residents abandoned it for other parts of Louisiana. Today, Jennings is a ghost town that remains largely rural with few physical proofs remaining from its once great glory.
