This community always remains close-knit despite its remote location; residents celebrate local events like Fourth of July fireworks shows and poker tournaments at the nearby casino each year. Jennings also boast one of America’s highest concentrations of French culture – with nearly half the population speaking that language fluently! After the war ended, many Jenners moved away from their settlement because of harsh wartime conditions and lower prices for agricultural produce; however, some continue to live there today. In 1919, Jenkinsonsville was placed within Caddo Parish boundaries when that parish was created from parts of Jefferson Parish and Orleans Parish. Today, Jennings is a small community located off Interstate 10 just east of New Iberia (the parish seat). The community has a population of about 100 people and is home to two high schools (New Iberia High School and Higgins-Stroud High School), two churches (Church Community Baptist Church and First Baptist Church), three businesses (Cotton Mill Radio Corporation/National Broadcasting Company/John Foust Tire & Rubber Co.), four homes (three single family homes and one duplex), two parks (One Park at Webb Park Speedway near Interstate 10/Belleplain Lake), one library (Jenkinson County Library) and one cemetery (All Saints Cemetery).
Jennings was founded by Isaac Jennings in 1812. The town was named after him and is located in the parish of St. Bernard. The first post office was established here in 1814. In 1870, Jennings had a population of 119 residents. The town was destroyed in a flood on May 17, 1915, by the Mississippi River as a result of heavy rains and swollen rivers downstream from New Orleans.
