Jennings, Louisiana is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. Jennings is home to the Jennings Baptist Church which was founded in 1837. In 1902, Jennings became an incorporated city and retains its status as a small town today. The first settlers of Jennings were farmers who arrived in the area in the early 1800s. By 1837, there were several families living in Jennings who had come from various parts of America. The first pastor of Jennings Baptist Church was Rev. John Aiken who served from 1837-1849. Reverend Aiken's wife Sally died soon after their arrival and he continued to minister until his death in 1851. Reverend Aiken's successor, Rev. James Hinson served for three years before being elected to fill the unexpired term of Drury Covington who had died earlier that year. Drury Covington had been mayor of Jennings when he died and so his seat became vacant and Hinson was elected to fill it on a one-year basis until he could be reelected by vote of residents on December 1st,1851 which he did successfully do with 71% of the vote! In 1857, Captain Edwin Higbee moved his family into what is now known as Higbee House which still stands today adjacent to the old high school building on Main Street (now named Higbee Drive).Captain Higbee served as captain of USS "Hancock" during her tour around North America during the War for Independence but lost his life at sea off Florida on July 8th 1775 aged only 26 years old! To this day Captains Edwin Higbees name remains associated with Hancock along with many other members from that crew including Commodore George Pocock USN(Retired) whose plaque can be seen inside USS "Hancock" Museum near Deck 8 Today's descendants of Captain EdwinHigbee live within walking distance of both locations! Jennings remained an unincorporated community until 1902 when it became an incorporated city under Mayor Wm J Cooksey Jr.. At incorporation, Mayor Cooksey stated: "I am proud to have become an incorporator because I believe that our town will maintain its historic character while becoming more prosperous than ever before." Jennings has since undergone many changes - most notably through annexation by neighboring Winn Parish - but has maintained its independent spirit and strong community spirit throughout these times! Jennings experienced some hard times during World War II due to its strategic location just outsideof New Orleans harbor making it difficult for goods shipping into or out of New Orleans Harbor without going through Jennings City limits! However; local citizens rallied together and efforts such as putting up large signs reading "NO NEW ORLEANS SHIPMENTS HERE" led to a decrease in traffic jamning streets near downtown New Orleans and helped increase production at local businesses! In postwar years however; growth picked back up with new businesses being opened all around town including a grocery store/cafeteria called Maggotte’sShortly thereafter landowner Wm S Jones donated funds toward erection of what would eventually become Jenkins Academy which later evolved into Jenkins High SchoolToday's major employers include AREA Airlines (a subsidiary Of Delta Air Lines), Stihl sawmills & Blades (manufacturer Of lawn mowers), Lumberyard Supply Co., Inc., UPS Store #1 & 2 (UPS Warehouse Chain), Lafayette Hardware Company & Gritters Alloys Corporation among others... all situated within blocks or less OF Jenkins Municipal Court!!!
