The store was founded in 1907 by Isaac A. Jennings and his wife Sarah. In 1922, the Jennings family sold the business to Harry J. Wessels, who continued to operate it until his death in 1984. The Old World Glass and Camera store had a large selection of optics including eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, magnifiers, scanners and more. The store also sold parts and equipment used in photography such as film cameras, tripods and lenses. After Harry J Wessels' death in 1984, his son John Wessels took over operations of the shop until he died in 1990. After John Wessels' death, his daughter Lori took over operations until she passed away in 2006. In 2007-2008, Cindy Hargrave (the widow of Harry J's son) operated the shop while her husband Robin ran an online presence for the business which ceased operations after Cindy Hargrave passed away suddenly on October 5th 2008 from a heart attack at age 78 years old In 2012-2013,, newlyweds Kathy and Todd Anderson bought the business from Lori Hargrave with plans to reopen it as an Optical Supply Shop under their name

The school became known as The Blind School of Louisiana in 1923-1925, then as Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIU-CA) after Carbondale, Illinois became the state university system of Illinois in 1925.
