Jennings, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest parish in Louisiana and the second-smallest municipality by population in New Orleans metropolitan area. Jennings was founded in 1824 as a French colony on the banks of the Mississippi River. The community name may derive from "Henrietta," one of several Parishes located within what would become Jefferson Parish. The first settler to arrive in Jennings was François Lafitte, who arrived during the early 1800s with his brother Antoine de la Vallière. Francois established a trading post near present day Orleans Avenue and Canal Street on the Vermilion River; this location became known as "Fouquet Pond." In 1824, Jennings was founded by Captain John Atherton and his family during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. Captain Atherton had been captured at Red River Valley and put into slavery; he eventually regained his freedom and moved to America where he purchased 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land between Thibodaux and Iberville counties near present day Jennings on which he erected a log cabinknown as "Athertons Landing." During its early years Jennings struggled economically because of its location on an agricultural frontier that lacked transportation links both ways between New Orleans and Baton Rouge or between Jackson County to the east and Lafourche Parish to the west. However, over time Jennings grew prosperous due to its strategic location - just upstream from two major rivers:the Vermilion River which served as a natural trade route for goods moving upriver from Illinois via Prairie du Sacand St. Charles Countiesand then downriver to Natchitoches Bayou - as well as its excellent soil quality which made it conducive to agriculture despite being located on flood plains subject to periodic inundations caused by local rainsstorms or by windblown snowmelt causing water levels in nearby waterways to rise above water mark). In addition, many wealthy planters began arriving in search of acreage suitable for cotton cultivation after Union General Ulysses S. The United States acquired Jennings from France on February 14, 1803 under Treaty of Paris ending the War of 1812.
