It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River and is home to Jennings State University. The first inhabitants in what is now Jennings were Native Americans. The area was first inhabited by the Catawba people before European settlement began. In 1803, Ulysses S Grant founded Fort Beauregard on an island in the river opposite present-day Jennings Village. Grants military post served as a refuge from Indian attacks during this time period. In 1812, Lewis Cass became governor of Louisiana after defeating John Quincy Adams in an election that was boycotted by Adams' supporters because he did not supportAdams' pro-slavery policies. When Cass took office, he began to reduce slavery throughout New France and Transylvania County in what is now northeastern Orleans Parish while increasing its presence in other areas including Baton Rouge and Lake Charles.. He also ordered construction of new fortifications along both banks of the Mississippi River to prevent slave raids from reaching Mobile Bay.. By 1814, all slaves had been emancipated except those used for production purposes within plantations outside New France or Transylvania County.. The last slave rebellion against their owner occurred in 1830 when some former slaves revolted against their white masters at Elmira Plantation near Thibodaux.. Although successful, it was not until 1861 when Confederate forces under JEB Stuart captured Mobile Bay that slavery finally ended across much of North America.. After Union victory over Confederate forces at Battle Of Many Battles (March 26–27), many freedmen moved south into Union territory where they found jobs working on farms or manufacturing products such as cotton goods.. In 1865 following Reconstruction which ended Reconstruction Era laws that allowed black men to vote but denied them ownership rights to property/land., many African Americans relocated back northward into central Louisiana where they continued agricultural work until recently

It became a parish in 1892. The Jennings family operated a general store until 1957 when they sold it to the Ladd Company for $2 million. The Ladds ran the store until 1984 when it was bought by the Gulf Coast Biscuit Company. In 1990, Gulf Coast BiscuitCompany merged with Nabisco which made Jennings an all-encompassing Nabisco subsidiary. The name of the company changed to Nabisco Brands Incorporated on July 1, 1998. In 2006, Nabisco announced that it would be selling its operations in Jennings to Premier Foods Group for $225 million including land and buildings valued at $200 million. On December 12, 2006, PremierFoodsGroup announced that it had successful closed on its acquisition of all assets of former Gulf Coast Biscuit Company subsidiary Journeys International Holdings LLC for an undisclosed amount of money and 2% minority interest in cash and stock ownership (the "acquisition").
