Jennings was founded in 1881 by settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The community changed its name to Jennings in 1887 after General James G. The Dempsey-Jennings Parish School District was established in 1903 and serves residents within Jennings, Dempsey, Forrest City, Jackson Heights and nearby rural communities including Abramsville and Huntersville. The school district offers pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; six elementary schools; two middle schools (grades 6-8); one high school (grades 9-12); one technical/business school; two adult learning centers which offer classes for adults with autism spectrum disorders, pregnant women/ mothers with young children, disabled veterans or their families; as well as a variety of other programs which include physical education and boys' basketball. In addition to traditional public schooling, Jennings citizens are able to attend private academies run by religious institutions such as Our Lady of Lourdes Academy (Original), Morris Catholic School (Strictly Regal) and First Baptist Church of Jennings (Fruitful Life). The Ouachita River forms the central axis around which Jenkinsons life revolves. With its current course it once flowed along what is now Main Street but due to flooding in 1913 it diverted near present day US 21st Street flowing into Lake Pontchartrain then eventually emptying into Mobile Bayou near New Orleans
