Jennings is home to the Jennings-Macon Technical College and the Jennings-Lafayette Regional Airport. The first Europeans to visit what is now Jennings were French traders in 1701. They named it "Joliette" after the Joliette River in central France. A post office was established at Jennings in 1851, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1961. Jennings started as an agricultural center with many cotton plantations and a few cattle ranches before becoming a vibrant community of manufacturing and service businesses during the late 19th century. The city's growth spurt during World War II saw rapid industrialization with new factories opening up such as the Lockheed Aircraft Company and Maytag Sewing Machine Company. Today, Jennings remains a small town but its economy has diversified with several high-tech companies accounting for some of its recent success including Intel Campus (formerly known as Iger Inc.) which opened up on land that formerly housed Monsanto/Red Lion Foods; Magellan Oil & Gas; Skyline Electric Cooperative; Lafayette Consolidated School District No. 1; Lafayette Consolidated School District No. 2; Lafayette Catholic Schools System; Lafarge North America Cement & Stone AG.; and Wacoal USA Corporation Headquarters (now part of Emerson Electric). In addition to these large employers there are numerous other businesses employing only fifty or more people located throughout downtown Jennings., making it one of the most walkable cities in Louisiana Despite this diverse mix of businesses, all share one common goal - providing quality customer service through their products and services
