When Jennings, Louisiana was founded in 1802, it was the most northerly community in the Louisiana Purchase. The area that is now Jennings had been inhabited for thousands of years by various Native American groups, and until 1802 there were no firearms. The first Europeans to visit Jennings were French traders in 1699. They brought with them guns and other weaponry, which quickly spread throughout New France. By 1722, guns had started being traded back and forth between the French and Native Americans. In 1753, a group of Englishmen landed in what is now Orleans Parish on the Mississippi River. They became interested in fur trade and began trading with the local Native Americans. One of these men was John Law, who later became known as Father Lachaise after he developed a system for tracking Indian movements. In 1754, Law acquired land east of Jennings on the parish boundary from Jean Lafitte (the founder of Biloxi). He named his new settlement Saint-Jacques de la Rivière (Salt Lake City), after one of his early investors – James Robertson (1715-1782) – who also contributed to Law's acquiring this land. Lafitte took over some trading operations from Law in order to focus on his fur business ventures farther upriver. However, upon learning about Saints-Jacques de la Rivière from one of Lafitte's colleagues downriver at their post at Iberia Bayou, Pierre Le Moyne (1695-1764) decided to move his basecamp there permanently in order to pursue development plans for what would become New Orleans proper. Although many people moved into Lafayette during this time period due to its strategic location along the river corridor connecting New Orleans with Mobile and all points northward before joining up with St Louis through Turtle Bridge near modern day Monroeville; Jennings remained largely untouched byettlement until around 1800 when Captain John Atherton built a small house on what is now US 52 just outside present day Jennings town limits while stationed at Baton Rouge Barracks under General Andrew Jackson’s command during the War For Independence; shortly thereafter Atherton removed any trees or brush within two miles radius which may have interfered with rifle fire range training exercises that took place every morning behind Ft Moultrie across Mill Creek almost immediately adjacent thereto.(1) By 1800 rifles were well established as an important part of local military culture hereabouts among both white settlers residing inside town limits as well as First Nations hunters/gatherers living beyond those boundaries title “gunners” having originated from Voleta Point just south side Big Bend Pkwy & Old Hammond Rd entrance – presently known as Frenchman’s Bottom .(2) It should be noted that today Rifle Practice Fields adjacent old fort are still considered Civilian Use but Open To The Public Upon Request.)(3) This initial growth led directly to several gunsmithing businesses soon opening up downtown including Jno Hickey’s Arms & Armoury opened January 15th 1801 right next door where we stand today…..
