Shotguns were originally made to shoot pellets and not shot rounds like rifles and handguns. This was because shotguns had a short barrel which made them easier to control than rifles and handguns with longer barrels. The first time a shotgun was used in Jennings was on November 14th, 1892 when J.F.Mairee fired one off of an old truck at two men who were trying to rob him near his home. The gunshot caused both men to go into hysterics and they ran away without further harm. In 1903, Johnnie Walker began producing beer in Jennings and needed a way to market it locally. He started selling bottles of beer out of his house which led to the development of the first brewery store in Jennings. Beer became very popular in Jennings so Walker decided to open another store called the “Jenny’s” which eventually became known as the “Beer Store Journal Building” today). In 1925, Sheriff Frank Hogg opened up his own jail after he was removed from office by Governor John McKeithen Sr.. Hogg decided that he would be more efficient if he had his own jail rather than relying on other jails across the state for storage purposes. The Jail building that now stands today was built for $5,000 dollars by local contractor James Treadwell Jr.. It took over a year for construction due to lack of funding but when it finally began operation on December 1st, 1926 it housed around 100 inmates/townspeople combined! Ibid., pg 9-10

In 1878, it became a village and was renamed Jennings after Colonel Samuel Jennings who fought in the American Civil War. The community grew rapidly following World War II when many farmers moved to the area because of military service or opportunities for education and work during wartime production shortages. In 1990, Jennings voted to secede from Webster Parish and become an independent city separate from Baton Rouge. However, this referendum failed to gain approval by local residents and it remains an unincorporated community within Webster Parish today. Jennings has a rich history that includes important moments such as its role as capital of Indian Territory during the 1830s when land grants were given out to various tribes; its involvement in both world wars; and its current status as a small New Orleans suburb with plenty of cultural attractions but little economic opportunity.

In 1811, Abraham Jennings married Anna Maria Lawrance and moved to Jennings. The couple operated a store and raised chickens until their death in 1831. Their son, James A. Jennings, continued the family business until it merged with another company in 1922. In addition to their store and home, Abraham Jennings donated land to be used as an agricultural college which now bears his name.

The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil near it in 1859, and by 1865 it had a population of over 1,000 people. Jennings experienced significant growth during the American Civil War (1861-1865), thanks to its location on the Mississippi River between Union and Confederate forces. The town was also important for manufacturing goods related to oil production. By 1870, Jennings had a population of 4,500 people, making it one of the largest towns in Louisiana. In 1930, Jennings was renamed Kilgore after then Governor John F. Kilgore.
