Jennings was founded by the Jennings brothers in 1872. The Jennings family owned and operated a grocery store in Jennings from 1872 to 1951. In 1951, the family sold their grocery store and business to the City of Jennings. The City of Jennings operates the business today as a public library. The history of Jennings is intertwined with that of Louisiana. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Louisiana were French colonists from Quebec who arrived in 1699. A small group of English traders also landed in Louisiana around 1715 and began trading with the indigenous people living there. By 1730, French settlers had established a presence in what is now Orleans Parish, which included present-day Jennings, LaGrange, and New Iberia Parish. When Spain ceded Texas to America in 1821, it became part of American Mexico and Mexican officials began administering Louisiana via its own government rather than American officials overseeing Spanish territory as it had been under Spanish rule for centuries. This confusing situation continued until 1845 when Texas was again given back to America and Mexican officials resumed administering Louisiana under American jurisdiction. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to launch an all-out effort to capture control of Mobile Bay so he could join forces with other Confederate generals invading Ball State University on Florida’s east coast on April 14th (the day before Appomattox Court House). As Mississippi’s capital city lay within Union territory at that time (it would become Union Territory after Sherman's march through Mississippi), few people outside Jackson knew about Confederate plans for Mobile Bay; therefore little was done or said about such an important strategic location within Confederate territory! On April 15th (4 days after MobileBay fell), Union soldiers captured Jackson and moved into downtown where they burned any buildings not belonging to military purposes! For nearly 2 months following Mobile Bay’s fall, no one inside Union Territory knew anything about Confederates marching through their state! On July 9th (2 days after battle at Corinth Pass), General Ulysses S Grant ordered his Army of Tennessee across Arkansas River Bridge into Missouri County near Vicksburg where he expected significant resistance from pro-Union forces led by Brigadier General Andrew Johnson (#29 US Volunteers) at Corinth Pass... nothing happened! Grant quickly realized that Johnson wasn't up against very bad opposition considering previous battles between his army and pro-Union militia near Corinth Pass... this suggests that either Johnson's troops weren't well trained or there was some sort of cover fire shielding Johnson's troops from enemy fire... these events suggest that Grant may have overestimated rebel strength & capabilities!!! Jennings, Louisiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jennings is located on the eastern edge of Livingston Parish and east of Baton Rouge proper. The area now known as Jennings was first settled by French Canadians in 1755 and named for Pierre-Jacques Jennings, Sieur de la Salle's aide-de-camp during his attack on Mobile in 1765. By 1800, Jennings had a population of only 100 people and was considered a rural outpost on the route between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. In 1806, Gov.-elect James Kenedy donated land to establish what would become Jennings as a town with a village hall and schoolhouse, which were built around 1829. The first post office opened in 1830; it was renamed Jennings in 1836 after General John D'Urville (1778–1847), who fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican War (1846–48). Jennings experienced some growth following World War II when many migrant workers moved there from throughout Louisiana to work on projects associated with the war effort such as building bridges, road construction, and artillery batteries. Jennings, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name is derived from James Jennings and his family who settled there in 1814. Jennings was founded by Captain John Cushing on a bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. In 1827, Colonel Andrew Jackson purchased land adjacent to Jennings from the Jennings family for $10 per acre. The first post office in Jennings was established in 1829. The town was named for Captain John Cushing and its first store opened in 1830. By 1840, the town had a population of 350 people and two churches were built: one on White Street and one on Church Street. In 1851, Mrs. Juana Ayer donated land to build a school which would become known as Our Lady of Peace School (later renamed St Joseph's Catholic School). In 1865, local citizens organized a fire department and dedicated it to St Joseph's Parish; this became known as the "Jennings Volunteer Fire Department". In 1870-71, the Jennings Mercantile Company began operations with five stores located along what are now Third Avenue(), Fourth Avenue(), Sixth Avenue(), Seventh Avenue(), Eighth avenue() and Ninth avenue(). The company was liquidated in 1902 but some of its assets were sold off and used to finance other businesses such as JMC Tours & Excursions which operated out of New Orleans until 1959 when it relocated permanently to Jennings; later that year it also became an affiliate of Destin-Based Adventure Tours which operates tours throughout Florida/Alabama/Mexico City metropolitan areas including Guadalajara MX).
