In 1838, John Herschel developed a new type of binocular design which allowed for magnification of up to four times. Binoculars became an important tool for farmers and laborers during the early days of World War I because they could see much more than other people in close up situations. After the war ended, sales ofbinoculars plummeted due to overproduction and rationing by both sides during what is called “the dark age” of optical technology following World War II. However, renewed interest in optics has led to renewed production throughout the years; most recently through visiting binoclular manufacturers at trade shows around the world such as those held annually in Texas each summer.

Jennings, Louisiana is an unincorporated community in Webster Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,972 as of the 2010 census. Jennings was named after General James Fenton Jennings and his family who settled there in 1836.
Jennings, Louisiana was settled in 1813 by the French and was named for Pierre Jennings, a French fur trader. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of several transportation routes. In 1836, it became an official parish within Rapides Parish. By 1848, Jennings had a population of 581 and was known as one of the most important cotton plantations in Louisiana. During the American Civil War, Jennings sided with the Union side and lost its importance as a cotton plantation. However, it continued to be a major center of trade until after Reconstruction began in 1865. Afterward, Jennings experienced significant economic decline and went through multiple name changes until it became simply Jennings in 1971.
