In 1977, local businessman/politician/businessman Lamar Hill won an election for mayoralty against then-mayor James Kilroy with 54% of the vote despite only having 1% of the total vote.. In 1992 businessman Donnie Duncan became mayor after winning a special election due to then-mayor Lamar Hill's death.. In November 2002 former Governor Edwin Edwards announced his candidacy for re-election but was unable to win because he did not have enough votes from within his own party.. In December 2002 Demarco Reeves was elected Mayor with 66% of the vote becoming Mississippi's first black Mayor since Reconstruction ..
