Jennings, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of West Carroll Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,005 at the 2010 census. Jennings is located on FM 2190 and its ZIP code is 78536. The first settlers in Jennings were French Canadians who arrived in 1765. Some of these early settlers are buried in the Jennings Cemetery. The present-day town was founded by James Jennings Sr., a planter and slave owner, who moved his family to what is now Jennings from Baton Rouge in 1824. James Jr., also a planter and slaveowner, founded the town around 1854 as a result of his business acumen and connections with fellow plantation owners in East Baton Rouge Parish. In 1865, John Aiken laid out an original block of land for what would become Jennings. The economic development of Jennings has been spurred by its location within easy access to Interstate 10 and other transportation arteries; its agricultural production; its large population for an agricultural community; and its status as a bedroom community for Baton Rouge metropolitan area residents during the post-World War II period. Jennings remains one of the most diverse small towns in Louisiana due to its mix of ancestries: French Canadian (57 percent), African American (23 percent), Irish (10 percent), German (8 percent), Italian (6 percent), Scandinavian (5 percent) and Anglo-Saxon backgrounds among others. The city's strengths include: strong civic engagement through local organizations such as the Knights Templar Masonic Lodge No. 922 & Order of Malta Society No../ 3/2nd degree member since 1984; excellent public education through more than 20 high school campuses including four Forrest High School graduate students who founded their own school district two years ago called "Stroudsburg Area Schools" which serves grades K-12th grade with classes starting on Monday morning afternoons; well developed infrastructure including roads, water systems, schools and businesses that have supported retail sales tax collection totaling $200 million since 2002 exceeding any other small town or rural municipality combined in terms of total annual revenue generated from taxes collected from retail businesses statewide dating back to 1995 when this data was first compiled by then state Superintendent Don Willett under directive from then Governor Edwin Edwards
