Jennings, Louisiana is a small town located in Iberia Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,874 at the 2010 census. In Jennings’ history are many ammunition manufacturers and distributors that have helped shaped the town into what it is today. Ammunition has been an important part of Jennings’ culture and economy for over 100 years. The first ammunition factory in Jennings was built in 1884 by Wm. C. Earp and Sons. It became known as Earp Ammo Manufacturing Company and produced rifle rounds, pistols, shotguns, and other firearms products such as ammunition belts and cases. In 1902, Jensie & Sons established a manufacturing plant to produce shotgun shells but this company closed within 5 years due to lack of demand from the market. In 1907, Fenton Ammunition Company opened up shop with multiple production warehouses across from each other on North Market Street in downtown Jennings. They manufactured pistol rounds (9mm Parabellum), shotgun rounds (12 gauge) and rifle rounds (5 inch). This company became well-known for their quality ammo products which remain popular to this day. In 1928, the state of Louisiana passed a law that restricted manufacture of handguns outside of licensed gunsmiths only so Fenton Ammo could continue producing handgun rounds until they were able to open another plant in 1930 under new ownership with more storage space available; however this company too failed to make much headway against competition from Smith & Wesson who had opened their own ammunition factory just west of Baton Rouge at that time making handgun rounds as well as rifles using Winchester cartridges including their Model 1886 Rifle round which utilized a different propellant than standard Winchester gunfire giving it an increased muzzle velocity thus resulting in greater accuracy when shot off target.) By 1932, all handguns except revolvers were now prohibited without special license from being made or imported into the state of Louisiana so Wm Henson & Son moved production operations back down south where they had already been doing rifle rounds for several decades before moving forward with handgun production again starting up at their original facility on West Beauregard Avenue which would remain active until 1986 when it was closed due to fire damage also resulting in the loss of many valuable artifacts associated with early Jennings firearm industry.) Jennings was founded in 1824 by Colonel James W. Jennings and his family. The town was named for him because he had purchased the land in 1819. The first post office was established in Jennings in 1825, and the town became a full-time seat of government in 1830. The population of Jennings peaked at almost 7,000 people in 1840, but it declined to about 2,500 by 1860. The townsite that now includes Jennings was acquired from the Chickasaw Nation by France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. French settlers arrived in what is now Jennings around 1800 and began cultivating crops and raising cattle. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson appointed Captain John Sledd to manage the area for the United States troops stationed at Fort Pickens on Mobile Bayou. After Jackson's death in1845, General James Kenedy took over command of US forces stationed at Mobile Bayou and ordered Captain Sledd to abandon all development activities on the bayou until further notice. In 1850, Colonel James W. Jennings purchased land near present-day Jennings from Pierre-André Lafitte for $2 per acre ($160 per kilometer). He started construction on a small community called Lafayette which he named after his home state of Louisiana (Lafayette County) – one of several towns built along Mobile Bayou during this time period as Ulysses S. Grant attempted to build a new capital city on the riverfront across from Mobile City Hall (now known as downtownMobile). The initial population of Lafayette reached about sixty residents when it opened its doors to strangers on October 15, 1850; however, within a year or so most residents had left for lack of opportunity or choice within Grant's new city government. By May 1861 only six residents remained - four men and two women who worked as domestic servants for local farmers while also living off their agricultural output - few enough to provide basic services such as mail service or streetlights necessary for an expanding cityscape bristling with high-rise buildings today However Lafayette continued to function virtually unchanged until 1865 when federal forces burned down much of it following Confederate attempts to burn down Ulysses S Grant's presidential library during Reconstruction
