In 1821, when New Orleans was established as a seaport, Houma became an official port within the new city limits. On November 5, 1840, a non-native American named John Sibley arrived in Houma with his family to build a plantation called Charity which he named after his wife's brother-in-law—an event that helped promote white settlement in this area In 1861–1865, Confederate soldiers burned down most of what remained of Charity following their unsuccessful attempt to take it from John Sibley. For many years thereafter there was little public or private commemoration of what happened to that plantation—just another dark chapter in Houma's history On July 20th, 1928 Hurricane Allen struck southern Louisiana; damage done to houmas included main streets being completely destroyed with only some windows remaining operable; total loss $2 million dollars In early 1935 local oil refineries were built adjacent to old cotton warehouses near exit #1 off I-10 west of town which allowed gasoline deliveries directly into town without having to go through Lafitte Island where supplies were brought in bulk business boomed because people could buy gasoline direct from refineries rather than waiting for shipments from other parts of Louisiana

Houma is a small town located in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, on the Gulf of Mexico. Houma was founded by French colonists in 1718 and became a part of the Spanish Empire in 1801. The area now known as Houma was first occupied by Native American people before Europeans arrived. The area was named for Philippe-Jacques d'Houma, a French nobleman who visited the region in 1699. In 1718, local landowner François Marquette traveled to the Gulf of Mexico and observed an Indian village at what is now Houma Beach. He called this location "Chateau de la Pointe" (House at the Point). In 1764, Francois Xavier Laclède built a fortified house on the present site of Houma Boulevard. La Salle built another fort here in 1768 during his military campaigns against New Orleansubsequently named Fort St Philip after Philip V of Spain. In 1800, General Andrew Jackson invaded Louisiana and destroyed most of La Louisiane except for Saint John's Parish which he divided into three parts - Lafourche, Choctaw Nation and Chitimacha Tribe - under the pretext that each tribe had aided France during its war with Spain. The area around Houma became an agricultural community during the early years of European settlement in Louisiana because until then there were no nearby markets or resources to sell goods other than foodstuffs brought overland from Canada or Mississippi through Thibodaux. The first permanent English settlers arrived hereabouts in 1802 when John Thornton sailed ashore from HMS Bristol expedition along Bayou Teche near modern day Baton Rouge to establish trading post with Indians led by Father Pierre Jean Lescarreur which later evolved into missions such as those established at Natchitoches (later Opelousas) and West Feliciana (now Mobile).
