When colonial officials learned about this custom they responded by ordering all such decorations stopped; however, local people continued to wear them anyway because they thought no one would mind if they looked like flowers rather than people A new courthouse was built west side of Main Street between 1840s when Jefferson Davis moved his family from Macon County to Bossier parishraising money for Confederate causes while living temporarily with relatives before moving permanently to Alexandria in 1865 In 1870s when general John Cane pulled out his army from Vicksburg Alabama due to lack food resources he ordered all male white citizens over 21 years old west side levee destroyed blocking off main street where most buildings stood including churches Hwy 5 & intrnt Rd but few homes still standing today
The Houma area was first settled by the Choctaw people in the early 1800s. The Houma community was established on the banks of the Mississippi River, about two miles from present-day downtown Houma. In 1853, markers were erected to commemorate the town's founding. In 1881, a group of entrepreneurs named John Neely bought land near downtown Houma and began building a cotton plantation. The establishment of this cotton plantation led to increased trade between Houma and other parts of Louisiana and helped spur growth in the town. The Factory Brothers brewery opened in 1902 and became one of the most important cultural attractions in Houma. In 1940, Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage to many businesses and homes in downtown Houma. However, despite this setback, progress has been made since then as many new businesses have opened up in the city.
