Houma is a small town in the southwestern corner of Louisiana, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. Houma is one of the poorest cities in Louisiana and has been known for its history of racism and discrimination against African Americans. The city was founded by Frenchmen in 1718 as part of Iberia Parish. In 1802, it became a U.S. territory and was renamed to Houma after Jean Baptiste Houma, a naturalist who visited the area in 1802. The city's first mayor was John Domingue, who served from 1817 until his death in 1825. In 1865, Confederate General Pemberton captured Houma with little resistance and took it as his headquarters during the Invasion of Arkansas; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of the Civil War in America. After Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, Houma reverted back to Union control under General Robert Ewell Jr.. The city experienced Reconstruction following Reconstruction which saw many black men work their way up through local government jobs while white people were barred from most positions or just not interested in working outside their homes entirely (though there were some exceptions). The post-reconstruction years were difficult for Houma as numerous fires burned throughout much of downtown due to uncontrolled arson by black residents; this continued into the 21st century into whichhoum went through substantial gentrification efforts spearheaded by businesses such as Starbucks and Papa John's Pizza that have contributed greatly to its current socioeconomic conditions. In recent years however significant protests against gentrification have taken place throughout downtown including blockades and occupy actions that have forced changes at both business owners and politicians alike

The Portuguese who had been living among the Native Americans in Acadiana were also deported during this time frame. As a result of these events, many Creek speakers relocated to central Louisiana where they formed new villages such as Baton Rouge and Alexandria).
