Houma, Louisiana is a city in the parish of Orleans in the north-central part of Louisiana. The population was 153,362 as of the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Louisiana behind New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Houma was founded by French colonists in 1718 and named for la Motte-à-Huachuca, an ancient village about 20 miles (32 km) east of present-day Houma. Lafitte began developing this saltpeter mine into one of the largest in America and soon became known as the "Father of Civilizations" because he helped create new transportation systems using canals and boats that made American trade possible. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1729 when James Cook sailed upriver from British North America for his famous voyage Around South America which brought him within touching distance of Mexico City via La Salle's Dominguez Expedition; Cook's landfall at Saint Domingue – then known as St Pierre et Miquelon – caused great excitement throughout Europe since it demonstrated that Europeans could travel directly to Spanish California without passing through Havana or Magellan Strait. The land that now forms Houma was first settled by Native Americans in what is now east-central Louisiana ceded to France by King Louis XIV in 1699 as part of the Treaty of Paris following his defeat at the Battle of Baton Rouge against Spanish forces under General Don Diego de Alvarado. The French built Fort Royal on present day Bayou Lafourche to defend this territory from British and Spanish settlers who had invaded it during the early eighteenth century overland route through Acadiana which linked Saint Domingue with Spain's Caribbean colonies via Mobile and Havana respectively. After France's fall from power in 1795, Spain took control over Acadiana including Houma; however, no native people were killed or enslaved during this time frame and most likely because there were few opportunities for such an undertaking given their lack of firearmspowder development skills at that point cf other areas where they had taken up arms against their conquerors during this period cf much larger areas like coastal Louisiana where they had major industry capabilities thanks to their Cahokia Mound complex located near Vermilionville which produced more than two thousand metric tons (2400 kg) per annum (bm) at its peak between 1500–1800 according to partial estimates based on unproven evidence) prior to contact with Europeans via water transportation routes following systems such as those used by both Acapulco traders visiting Mexico City regularly throughout much lower central Texas beginning about 1400 BCE corresponding approximately contemporaneously centuries earlier cf significant quantities remains today buried beneath bluff overlooking Mobile Bay
