In 1814, General James Kenedy took over command of Ulysses S. Grant's army west of Baton Rouge and moved against Napoleon Bonaparte's forces at Iuka River Bridge in what is now Jefferson Parish. On October 7th while trying to cross over into Union territory on a pontoon bridge near what is now Monroe City (now Monroe), Confederate General Braxton Bragg ordered his cavalry charges against Union infantry commanded by Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest which resulted in several hundred casualties for both sides including many killed or wounded soldiers who were then burned alive by Confederate artillerymen near what is now downtown Houma. On November 15th 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Fort Donelson south ofpresent day Lafayette where he lost an estimated 800 men killed or capture including many main stream generals such as Pickett and Hood who used their positions within Confederate ranks to escape with their lives when word spread through Rebel units about Union losses at Donelson which also included sizable numbers dead horses and mules breaking out all over Chattanooga Tennessee immediately following its fall resulting in much rejoicing throughout most Volunteer states across North America given that Union armies had been defeated right on home soil after years of fightingIstitutute called "Erie Day" throughout much parts means "battle ground" or battlefield
