Houma, Louisiana is a town in the U.S. state ofLouisiana on the Gulf coast of the Mississippi River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 25,895. Houma is bordered by New Orleans to the west and east, Biloxi to the north, and St. Bernard Parish to the south. The city proper has a total area of 23 square miles (70 square kilometers). The first European visitor to Houma was Father Jacques Marquette in 1699 when he made an exploration downriver from present-day New Orleans into what is now Jefferson Parish for missionary purposes. Jesuit Father José de la Garza also visited Houma in 1768 while on his way from Mobile Bay to Baton Rouge. In 1802 an act Congress passed providing for an election Committee on Elections within each parish gave rise to Houma's name as it appears on a map dated February 2, 1802, just prior to its incorporation as a town under that name with voting privileges reported by That same year’s Gazetteer Magazine: “We have here one thousand seven hundred fifty-six citizens who voted at our last annual election; we had no other Place appointed for this purpose” In 1827 President James K. Polk recommended that Congress establish “a post office at Houma in order that letters sent hither may not be lost or stolen in transit through Jackson County and Shelby County” As early as 1830 there were plans advanced by then-Mayor John Pemberton Sr., son of Mayor John Pemberton Jr., to re-establish commerce along Veterans Boulevard in downtown which would include new buildings including a theater and store fronts facing Lafayette Avenue A bill finally became law establishing Post Office District No 8 January 1st 1830 with precinct headquarters located at 501 Veterans Boulevard The first mail service arrived here December 10th 1830 With only two horses pulling ten sacks per hour operations quickly grew into twenty sacks per hour with over one thousand pounds hauled annually before 1840 when steamboats began arriving bringing coffee and other goods weekly . By 1850 coffee shops had been established all around town . From 1840 until 1865 cotton ginners produced more than five hundred acres of wheat every day . In 1865 Confederate General Robert E Lee invaded Louisiana and after driving Unionist forces out of their home base near Sabine Pass surrendered at Appomattox Court House April 9th 1865 . On April 12th 1865 General Johnston ordered all military forces must leave Vicksburg following it's fall into Union hands . Most evacuated immediately but about sixty men chose instead to cross the river rather than surrender By 1870 there were six businesses operating inside& outside houmas limits - three newspapers & three bookstores - four music stores & four machine shops

The first European woman to live in Houma was Marie Parenteau who arrived with her husband Jean Baptiste Parenteau on Dec 4th, 1800 from Annonay sur Ile (now Antoineville), a small island off the coast of Normandy which at that time formed part of Canada. On Jan 1st 1804 many more French families arriving at Bienville Bay disembarked at Point Coupee where they founded a new town named for General Marquis de Lafayette which became known as "Houmas". By 1815 over 100 families lived there including both Huguenots (French Protestants) and Catholics from various parts of France including Caracas ( Venezuela ), Bordeaux ( France ), Montpellier (France), Nantes (Canada), Rochefort (France), Quebec City(Quebec), Toulouse(Ile Saint Francois) and Marseille(Malta). In 1840 about 150 people lived there with about 50% being Catholic Irishmen coming from County Armagh in Northern Ireland . The early years were difficult due to high water levels resulting in frequent flooding which destroyed most homes during floods that occurred regularly throughout the decade leading up to American independence however by 1845 things had started looking up with some new homes being erected along Westport Avenue while others were acquired through purchase or Donation land grants given out by General Lafayette himself In 1870 total enrollment increased To 597 students but by 1880 only 291 residents remained making it an agricultural center rather than one considered important for education purposes
