The history of handguns in Houma, Louisiana dates back to the 1870s. One of the first pistols manufactured in Houma was a model 1860 automatic rifle called the “Houma Rifle.” The rifle was designed by Colonel George Armstrong Custer and manufactured by J.B. Frick & Sons at their plant on US Highway 9 near downtown Houma. It utilized a six-round magazine, had a stock made from poplar, and was chambered for the .45 caliber Colt revolver cartridge. In 1903, local gunsmiths Averill & Morse produced what is considered to be the first true handgun in America—the Rangeman Model A9/.357 Magnum revolver. This pistol featured an 8-inch barrel and 5 round magazine holding either lead or gold bullets. It was used by law enforcement officers and military personnel throughout America until it was replaced by more modern designs in the 1920s. During World War II, many Houma citizens volunteered to serve in the Armed Forces; some even took up arms themselves and became known as “Guns for Hire” because they possessed firearms that were not registered with government agencies or licensed under state laws. In 1946, The National Firearms Act came into effect which regulated firearms in the United States; this act limited ownership to individuals who met certain requirements such as owning a valid license and having no records of criminal activity involving firearms

Houma, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Orleans, Louisiana. The population was 3,521 at the 2000 census. Houma is one of the oldest towns in Louisiana and is known for its black community and history as a center of cotton production. The first humans to arrive in what is now Houma were some of the Siouan-speaking Caddo people who migrated from central Oklahoma about 12,000 years ago. By 1800, the Caddo had spread eastward into present-day Arkansas and Missouri. In 1803, Ulysses S. Grant sailed upriver from New Orleans on his way to survey the area for military campaigns against Mexico. He named it after General Pierre Laclède Foch's troops had destroyed an Indian village near Baton Rouge two years earlier. The town was founded by Captain James Aiken on a bend in the river near where Interstate 10 begins today. Aiken built a toll road from his plantation to market and developed land around Houma for farming and trading with other settlements in what are now Jefferson Parish and Lafourche Parish east of Baton Rouge. In 1811, French explorer Louis Hébert set out from New Orleans on horseback to explore this area which he called "Isle aux cygnes". On July 6 of that year, he discovered an island off shore that he named Acadia after Admiral Rufus King's failed attempt to circumnavigate America during his Northwest Passage Expedition (1801-1804). Hébert later became known as France's first natural scientist because of his discoveries along the Gulf Coast On December 17th, 1813 while steaming downriver from St Landry Parish towards Biloxi Bay due south of modern day Houma City Limits there was an attack by over 20 Native Americans aboard a steamboat anchored at Lower Mobile Bay on Lake Pontchartrain called Thetis Massacre when 5 white men crewed by 4 Indians were killed including 2 Captains: John Dye (Master) & Samuel Merrill ( admiring Photographer) commandeered HMS brig HMS Albion then proceeded downriver Assaulting every boat they came across until driven away by superior British Navy forces under Rear Admiral Sir John Ligonier who arrived just before dawn!! It has been documented that these assailants were warriors linked with Tecumseh’s War Party led by Chief Osage chief Miami – also know as Tallahassee – which fought against Great Britain throughout most or all of 1813 including Battle at Prairie du Chien Iowa January 15th resulting in British Loss/Death Of 150 Officers And Men Journal Entry #1
Houma was founded in 1803 by French colonists as a trading post on the Mississippi River. The post served as a rallying point for American forces during the Mexican-American War, and became an important port of entry for goods from Louisiana. In 1836, Houma was incorporated as a city, and it remains one of the largest cities in Louisiana today.
