Houma is a small town in the parish of Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles east of New Orleans. Houma's history goes back to 1814 when it was part of the colony of Natchitoches. In 1861, Houma seceded from New Orleans and became an independent republic under Confederate General Pemberton. After the Confederacy surrendered, Houma rejoined New Orleans and has been a part of that city since then. The economy in Houma is primarily based on commerce and agriculture. The town has two newspapers - the "Houmas Chronicle" and "The Times-Picayune". Some notable businesses include PepsiCoCola, Tyson Foods, Lululemon Athletica Inc., Toyota Motor Sales America Inc., Jardiniere Farms Limited Partnership, Becton Dickinson & Co., ExxonMobil Corporation and Louisiana Consolidated Railroad Company (LCC). Today Houma remains an overwhelmingly white community with few African Americans living there full time or in significant numbers. However there are a number of black physicians and business owners who have helped make this town more diverse over the years; some examples include: state Rep. Wendell Young (D), current Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D), former Mayor John Bel Edwards (D) and businessman Derrick Johnson (B&O Railroad).

Houma is a city in the state of Louisiana, United States. The population was 38,859 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by French colonists in 1718 on the present-day site of Houma Plantation. In 1802, it became part of Orleans Parish and then Claiborne Parish. It was incorporated as a city in 1892. The first European settlers to Houma were France's Marquis de Lafayette and his band of officers who landed on Acadia Bay on February 14, 1718, during the British Invasion of North America. Lafayette's landing marked the beginning of French colonization in what is now Louisiana. The original land grant for Houma was 2,500 acres (1 km2). On October 12, 1722, royal governor Edward John Carreño granted an additional 600 acres (200 hectares). In 1723–24, two years after Lafayette's arrival at Houma, Pierre-Jacques Courcelle built a small chapel and surrounding family farmstead near what is now downtown on the bank of River Road that later became known as Houma Plantation. By 1800 more than 100 families lived around Houma and its wharf where salt water from Lake Pontchartrain could be imported for local use or processed into dishes like houmous (a type of cream sauce) or casseroles before being exported to Europe or New Orleans. Afterward many people abandoned rural life forurban living which led to social fragmentation and economic decline due to transportation improvements brought about by American Revolutionary forces in 1685 that shortened travel time between points along the Mississippi River from weeks up to days across much of colonial America including parts neighboring present day Louisiana including HouMA! In addition rapid settlement increased competition for limited natural resources with factors such as slave trade leading to discrimination against black Americans until after Reconstruction when their civil rights were recognized by Ulysses S Grant’s Executive Order No 1 which read "All persons born within this State since January 1st next following are citizens thereof." This order created opportunities for African Americans who had hitherto been barred from participating politically or economically in white society through education and hard work through organizations such as Booker T Washington’s Tuskegee Institute which he started while working at Griggs & Co., one of Livingston’s largest cotton brokers/dealers
In 1803, the area that is now Houma was part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. The United States acquired it as part of the Treaty of Paris in 1814. The town was founded in 1817 by a group of American traders and settlers who came to Houma from nearby LA. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1836, Houma became an independent republic after a rebellion against French rule ended with the death of Emperor Napoleon III. After two years of War for Independence, Houma fell to General Pohl’s Confederate army in November 1840. When Union forces captured New Orleans in April 1862 capturing all but one parish within Orleans Parish and much of Lousiana, Houma reverted back to French control until 1861 when it became an integral part of the new U.S. state of Louisiana following its secession from France
