The site had been occupied by Native Americans since pre-historic times and local legend has it that Chief Tecumseh visited this location before his battle against American forces at Mobile Bay on November 3, 1763 which led to his death at the hands of white settlers under General James Callender; Tecumseh's spirit still haunts this part of Louisiana today! In 1803, after becoming an independent city under control of Jefferson Parish, Houma added much land east of present day Interstate 10 including parts of Tensas Parish and Ascension Parish north of Lake Pontchartrain as well as St Tammany Parish west of I-10 within its limits then being known as "Stroud's Point". These boundaries changed following Hurricane Katrina when most or all portions within Stroud's Point were submerged during landfalling storm surge waters along with much adjacent land situated between I-10 and Saint Bernard River resulting in loss or destruction totaling $25 million ($304 million today). In 1954, Houma merged with Yucaipa City to form one municipality under the name Yucaipa-Houma-New Orleans Urban Statistical Area
